CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - The Calgary Flames have traded young defenseman Tim Erixon and a fifth-round pick in this month's draft to the New York Rangers for junior forward Roman Horak and two second-round draft choices.

The Flames made the trade Wednesday as they faced a deadline to sign the 20-year-old Erixon, Calgary's first-round choice in 2009, or lose him. Erixon wouldn't sign the standard three-year rookie contract and, according to Calgary general manager Jay Feaster, was willing to go back into the draft.

The Rangers said they agreed to an entry-level deal with Erixon, the son of former New York forward Jan Erixon. The maximum annual salary a 2009 draft pick can make is $900,000, plus bonuses.

Horak, a fifth-round pick by the Rangers in 2009, played the past two seasons in the Western Hockey League.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
