Hernia surgery sidelines Canucks' Samuelsson
VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Canucks announced Thursday that right wing Mikael Samuelsson has undergone surgery to repair his adductor tendon and fix a sports hernia. Coach Alain Vigneault said he would miss the remainder of the playoffs.

"He was our best player last year in the playoffs and he had some tough luck early in the playoffs this year," said teammate Daniel Sedin. "He's a big part of this team and we're going to miss him, but like any other injury you need other guys to step up."

Samuelsson suffered a lower-body injury in mid-March during a loss to the Phoenix Coyotes. It's believed Samuelsson re-aggravated the injury during the Canucks' loss to Nashville in Game 5 of their conference semifinal series when he collided the Predators' Nick Spaling. He has not played since.

"I know he's had a few issues there this year with the groin there, but he had been fine until he got hurt on the ice there (in Game 5)," said Vigneault. "I think he missed a couple games because his groin was a little bit sore there, but not to the extent of when he got hurt."

In 11 playoff games, he has 1 goal, 2 assists and a minus-4 rating. His only goal was the game-winner in Game 3 of the first round against the Blackhawks. He also missed Game 1 of the Blackhawks series due to what the team said was the flu.

Samuelsson had 18 goals and 50 points during the regular season. He was the lone member of the Canucks with a Stanley Cup ring, won with the 2008 Red Wings.

Quote of the Day

I kept refreshing the page on the NHL website after the second round and I was shocked he lasted that long. I'm sure the Coyotes were pretty happy to get him. He's such a good player and he plays big in big games.
