U.S. dealt 5-3 loss by Switzerland at Worlds
Switzerland didn't advance to the quarterfinals at this year's IIHF World Championship.

The United States did, but they won't be going any farther without a better effort than the one delivered Monday.

Kevin Lötscher scored twice and the Swiss, with nothing to play for except pride, defeated the U.S. 5-3 in Kosice, Slovakia, on the final day of the Qualification Round.

The U.S. finished fourth in Group F with a 2-2-1 record and will face the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.

James van Riemsdyk, who just joined the U.S. team after his Philadelphia Flyers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, scored with 1:43 remaining to draw them within 4-3, but Ryan Gardner's empty-net goal with 17 seconds left sealed it for Switzerland.

The U.S. struck first in this game, getting a goal from Craig Smith at 11:01 of the opening period, but the Swiss answered back with the next three. Lötscher beat Ty Conklin off a great individual effort to tie the score, then Raphael Diaz put them in front to stay with a sharp-angle shot that got past Conklin and just over the goal line before Mike Brown swept it away. Video review confirmed the goal at 14:10 of the first.

Ivo Rüthemann extended the lead to 3-1 just 66 seconds into the middle period. Ryan Shannon brought the U.S. within a goal on another play that required video review to determine the puck crossed the goal line before the net was dislodged, but Switzerland regained the two-goal lead on Lötscher's second of the game.
