Gordon to lead Team USA at Worlds

USA Hockey announced Wednesday that Scott Gordon has been named coach of the 2011 U.S. Men's National Team that will participate in the IIHF World Championship, in Kosice and Bratislava, Slovakia. The tournament runs April 29 through May 15.

Gordon, who coached the New York Islanders for parts of three seasons (2008-10), served as coach of the 2010 U.S. National Team at last year's tournament, finishing 13th. He also was an assistant coach for the silver-medal winning 2010 U.S. Men's Olympic Team in Vancouver.

"We're extremely pleased to have Scott back behind the bench," said Jim Johannson, USA Hockey's assistant executive director for hockey operations. "We're fortunate to have someone with his experience level, particularly in international hockey."

Also announced was the U.S. Men's National Team Advisory Group will pick the players for the event. On the committee are NHL general managers Brian Burke (Maple Leafs), David Poile (Predators), Paul Holmgren (Flyers), Ray Shero (Penguins), Dean Lombardi (Kings) and Dale Tallon (Panthers). Also on the committee are Atlanta Thrashers president Don Waddell, and Johannson.

Predators assistant GM Paul Fenton will serve as associate GM for Team USA.

Versus will televise all Team USA games in the tournament, which begins April 30 in Kosice against Austria. The U.S. also will play Norway on May 2 and Sweden on May 4 before the qualification round commences May 5-9. The gold-medal game is slated May 15 in Bratislava.
