Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin will miss Tuesday's game in Philadelphia (7:30 p.m. ET, VERSUS, TSN2) with a nagging, undisclosed ailment, according to the team's website. According to the report, Ovechkin will be sidelined for "a short period of time."
Tuesday's game is Washington's only game in a six-day period. Caps GM George McPhee told the website Ovechkin should be sidelined 7-10 10 days. He has played in all of the team's 73 games to date.
"He just needs to take some time off to get completely healed up," McPhee said.
The Capitals' lead in the Southeast Division has reached five points thanks to 10 wins in their last 11 games. The Capitals are second in the Eastern Conference with 94 points, two behind the Flyers.
Ovechkin has a point in 14 of the last 16 games, with 8 goals and 21 points in that time. Washington is 13-3-0 in that span.
"He's been bothered by this nagging ailment for a couple of months," Caps coach Bruce Boudreau told the website. "We just thought we'd take care of it now. His body needs a little bit of rest. We thought this was a good time to rest his body for a week to two weeks so he's fresh come April."
