Bouwmeester sets ironman record for defensemen
Jay Bouwmeester set an NHL record for consecutive games played by a defenseman when he stepped on the ice for the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night against Phoenix at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

It was Bouwmeester's 496th consecutive game, surpassing the mark of 495 set by Karlis Skrastins.

Bouwmeester was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the first round (No. 3) in the 2002 Entry Draft. He played 342 consecutive games with the Panthers, starting in the 2003-04 season, before he was traded to Calgary on June 27, 2009. He has played all 154 possible games since coming to the Flames.

In all, Bouwmeester has played 625 NHL games, scoring 60 goals and adding 191 assists for 251 points, along with 417 penalty minutes.
