Taylor Hall to miss rest of season

Taylor Hall's rookie season has come to an early end.

The Edmonton Oilers said Friday that Hall, the No. 1 pick in last June's Entry Draft, will miss the rest of the season with a high ankle sprain that the team says will require eight weeks to heal.

Hall was injured in his first NHL fight, a second-period scrap against Columbus' Derek Dorsett in Thursday's 4-2 win against the Blue Jackets. Hall fell awkwardly during the fight, and his left leg buckled under him. The fight came after Hall had scored his 22nd goal and added an assist -- enough to earn First Star honors for the game.

The Oilers made the announcement after Hall had an MRI on the ankle.

"Taylor is one of the most talented and competitive young players I've seen in the game. Unfortunately he was hurt last night, but I'm confident he will work extremely hard through this injury to continue and grow as a true impact player for the Edmonton Oilers and the NHL," GM Steve Tambellini said in a statement. "The time frame for rehab of his injury will give him plenty of time to have a solid summer of training to be ready for next season.”
 
Hall is tops on the Oilers with 22 goals and has 42 points in 65 games. He's third among rookies in goals and points.

“I’m obviously very disappointed with the MRI results today," he said. "However, I know this isn’t going to slow me down.  I’m hoping for a quick recovery and can hopefully get back on the ice soon and get ready for next season."

While it's disappointing to lose his potential Calder Trophy candidate, Oilers coach Tom Renney said was glad to see Hall stick up for himself.

"We drafted character so we definitely expect character to show up and it did," Renney said after Thursday's game. "Good for him. Scraps happen. He had enough of the liberties."
