Playing the Caps pays off for local hockey fan
The Washington Capitals are battling for a Southeast Division title, so the last thing they want to be associated with is a lottery pick.

But in the case of Jimmy Smith of Alexandria, Va., the Caps probably don't mind.

Smith used a little inspiration from the Capitals to win $100,000 in the Virginia Lottery's Cash 5 game by using the numbers of five Caps players.

The winning numbers for the Feb. 17 drawing were 8-19-21-22-28, or Alex Ovechkin-Nicklas Backstrom-Brooks Laich-Mike Knuble-Alexander Semin.

'I fell on the floor," Smith told lottery officials as he claimed his prize. 'I still don't believe it's true."

Smith said he plans to pay bills with the winnings.

Quote of the Day

I don't have a crystal ball. Predicting is a real complicated thing. If we stay healthy, have enough depth and get the good goaltending we think we're going to have, you can go all the way. But a lot of things have to happen. There's going to be a lot of teams that think the same thing. Everyone made deals. We're all are optimistic about where we'll end up.
