CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - The Flames added some defensive depth for the playoff stretch drive by claiming Brett Carson off waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes.

Calgary made the move Monday a few hours before the NHL trade deadline.

Carson has split time this season between the Hurricanes and Charlotte of the AHL. In 72 career NHL games, Carson has two goals, 10 assists and 20 penalty minutes.

The defenseman is no stranger to his new city, having played for the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen from 2002-06. Carson was chosen by Carolina in the fourth round of the 2004 draft.

Quote of the Day

That's a really tough thing to play through; when you finally are thrown out there, the game is fast, intense, every single play matters, you've got to find a way to play through that and make smart plays. So it's a huge testament to [Vermette] and some other individuals in our locker room that are putting their own ego, their own wants and needs aside, and are ready for those opportunities when they do come.
