It's official: Bryan McCabe is a New York Ranger.
The Rangers acquired the 35-year-old defenseman from the Florida Panthers on Saturday for Tim Kennedy and a third-round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft. Now, as the Blueshirts bolstered their blue line, it’s your turn as fantasy owners to bolster your fantasy rosters.
While it may be unreasonable to pencil in the kind of production McCabe had as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2003-07, McCabe has shown he can still be a more than serviceable contributor night in and night out.
Through 48 games this season, McCabe has scored 5 goals and added 17 assists for 22 points and 88 shots on goal -- not bad considering Florida has one of the least prolific offensive units in the Eastern Conference. Equally as impressive, perhaps, is that McCabe has a positive plus/minus rating (plus-3), the first time in four seasons.
Joining a Rangers team that prides itself on stingy defensive play, that number figures to improve -- while McCabe’s offensive numbers can do the same on a team with seven players with double-digit goal totals, including Marian Gaborik and Brandon Dubinsky. Expect McCabe to see lots of time on the power play, an area in which the Rangers are counting on a boost from his big shot.
