Phoenix Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall has been suspended two games for a hit Tuesday night on Philadelphia defenseman Oskars Bartulis, the League announced Wednesday.

Upshall checked Bartulis into the boards 17 seconds into the second period as Flyers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was covering the puck. Bartulis left the game with an upper-body injury and is scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday.

"It was a late hit," Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren told reporters. "I guess I got a little bit of a problem with it, yeah. It’s not really like Scottie to do that. Things happen."

Upshall received a two-minute minor penalty for boarding on the play. The 27-year-old Upshall will miss games Wednesday night at Tampa Bay and Friday night at Columbus as part of the suspension.

He has 16 goals and 27 points in 60 games for the Coyotes. Upshall played for the Flyers from February 2007 to March 2009 before being traded to Phoenix with a second-round pick for Daniel Carcillo.

Upshall will forfeit $24,193.54 in salary and the money will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

"I didn't intentionally go to drive him, let alone drive him into the boards," Upshall told reporters after the game. "Those plays happen a lot where guys are just standing up to each other. I hope he’s all right."
