After a guy who is no stranger to scoring goals in the All-Star Game, Alex Ovechkin, got the action started 50 seconds in, Colorado's Paul Stastny became the game's first player to register his first career All-Star tally. Patrick Sharp fed Stastny for an easy one-timer on a 2-on-1 to give Team Staal a 2-0 lead at 2:48 of the first period.
Patrik Elias had three All-Star assists in his career after appearing in the 2000 and 2002 games, but he added his first goal at 3:20 with an assist from Stastny. Claude Giroux made it three straight players scoring their first All-Star goal for Team Staal at 5:41, and it was the second goal of the period set up by Sharp.
Los Angeles star Anze Kopitar started Team Lidstrom's comeback with a pretty goal at 10:50. Kopitar stopped Carolina goaltender Cam Ward's shutout bid by snapping a backhanded shot under the crossbar.
Dustin Byfuglien got some help from some old friends to earn his first All-Star marker. Chicago teammates Duncan Keith and Patrick Kane helped set up Byfuglien, an ex-Blackhawk, for a one-timer at 13:17 of the first to get Team Lidstrom within two goals at 4-2.
Loui Eriksson, who has 82 goals since the start of the 2008-09 season, made it a 4-3 contest in his first All-Star appearance at 16:07 of the opening period.
Matt Duchene collected his first career All-Star goal late in the first period with the help of his captain. He completed Team Lidstrom's comeback from an early 4-0 deficit to level the score at 16:07. Nicklas Lidstrom sprung Duchene on a breakaway and he snapped a shot into the top-left corner past Ward.
Sharp originally had three assists in the first period, but one was taken away upon further review. He made it a three-point night shortly after that with his first All-Star goal at 1:18 of the second period.
Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang became the second rearguard to score in the game. His shot banged off the iron and in at 6:10 of the middle period with assists from Daniel Sedin and Ovechkin.
Steven Stamkos tied for the League lead in goals last season and is on top of the leaderboard this year at the All-Star break with 38, and he added his first career All-Star tally at 14:11 of the second. Like on so many of his goals the past two seasons, Stamkos collected a pass from Martin St. Louis before snapping a shot under the crossbar from a tough angle to tie the game at six.
