Howard injures knee, Holmstrom breaks hand

Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard had to be helped off the ice in the first period of Friday's game in Columbus after bruising his knee.

Howard was untouched by another player as he blocked a shot by the Blue Jackets' Derick Brassard at 12:43 of the first period. He leaned down with his blocker, his legs tucked under him, and fell to the ice. He lay there for several minutes before he was gingerly helped to the dressing room. The Wings announced via their Twitter feed that Howard had a bruised knee, and he did not return.

The 26-year-old came into the game with a 22-7-3 record, two shutouts, a 2.78 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. With backup Chris Osgood already sidelined due to hernia surgery, Howard was replaced by third-stringer Joey MacDonald.

Mlive.com reported that general manager Ken Holland said X-rays on Howard were negative, but there is some swelling. The Wings will recall a goalie from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, either Thomas McCollum or Jordan Pearce, to serve as MacDonald’s backup in Saturday’s rematch with the Blue Jackets at Joe Louis Arena.

Along with the loss of Howard, forward Tomas Holmstrom broke his hand late in the third period and is expected to miss at least four weeks of action.

"That's just the way it goes sometimes," coach Mike Babcock said following the game. "You get injuries and you just have to fight through them."

The Wings, who trailed 2-0 at the time of the injury, rallied before losing 3-2 in a shootout.
