NEW YORK (AP) -Tim Thomas made 15 of his 34 saves in the third period, turning away three shots when Boston was down two men in the third and lifting the Bruins to a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Milan Lucic, Tyler Seguin and Mark Recchi scored three consecutive goals as Boston won its second straight and improved to 7-1 on the road. The Bruins have scored 21 goals in their past five road games.

Brandon Dubinsky and Marian Gaborik scored for New York, but the Rangers had their three-game winning streak snapped. They lost in regulation for the first time in seven games (5-1-1) against a Northeast Division opponent.

Henrik Lundqvist made 17 saves in dropping to 14-5-2 all-time against Boston.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby scored on a breakaway seven seconds after leaving the penalty box, Max Talbot scored short-handed and the Penguins beat Vancouver in regulation for the first time in 10 years.

The Canucks were 7-0-1 against the Penguins since losing 4-2 on Nov. 3, 2000, and had won their last four in Pittsburgh.

Marc-Andre Fleury played his fourth consecutive strong game in goal since playing his way out of a slump in which he lost six of his first seven, stopping 29 shots.

Defenseman Dan Hamhuis, who turned down a Penguins offer to sign with Vancouver last summer, scored.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Matt Bradley had a goal and an assist, and the Capitals held off a comeback by Buffalo Sabres for a 4-2 win Wednesday night.

It was Bradley's first multiple-point game since Jan. 7. Nicklas Backstrom and David Steckel also scored as the Capitals took a 3-0 lead early in the second period.

Washington, which has a league-high 29 points, is 10-1-0 at the Verizon Center.

Derek Roy and Jordan Leopold scored less than a minute apart in the second period for Buffalo.

Alexander Semin had an empty-net goal in the final seconds and an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to nine games, the longest by a Capital this season.

Michal Neuvirth made 31 saves for his 12th victory of the season.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Steven Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 16th goal and added an assist as Tampa Bay sent the Islanders to their 11th straight loss, spoiling the debut of New York coach Jack Capuano.

Capuano, promoted on Monday from the AHL on an interim basis after Scott Gordon was fired, couldn't change New York's fortunes in his first game as an NHL head coach.

The Islanders (4-11-3) returned home from a three-game California trip that produced only one point and had their skid extended to 0-10-1. New York, which got goals from Matt Moulson and John Tavares, hasn't won since beating Tampa Bay on the road on Oct. 21 - a 3-2 overtime victory. The Islanders have a league-low 11 points.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Eric Staal had three goals, including the 200th of his career, and two assists for Carolina.

Chad LaRose added two goals and two assists, Tim Gleason had a goal and an assist and Tuomo Ruutu also scored for the Hurricanes, who put up four goals in the first period against Brian Elliott.

Cam Ward made 23 saves for Carolina. Reeling after consecutive blowout losses to Philadelphia and at Montreal, the Hurricanes shook up the roster a few hours before the puck dropped.

Daniel Alfredsson scored late for the Senators, who lost their second straight. Elliott stopped just 12 shots in fewer than 17 minutes before he was pulled for Pascal Leclaire, who made nine saves but allowed three goals.

ATLANTA (AP) - Stephen Weiss and Radek Dvorak scored second-period goals and Tomas Vokoun stopped 38 shots for Florida.

Vokoun has allowed only one goal in each of his three straight wins in a span of a week. The Panthers have won three of their past four and ended a streak of three straight losses in Atlanta.

The Thrashers lost their sixth in seven games games since a 4-3 win at Florida on Nov. 3. Zach Bogosian scored his first goal of the season for Atlanta.

DETROIT (AP) - Dan Cleary's second goal of the game broke a third-period tie and began a four-goal rally to lift the Red Wings.

Cleary also stretched his goal streak to six games, Drew Miller and Justin Abdelkader each had a goal and an assist.

Henrik Zetterberg, Brad Stuart and Tomas Holmstrom also scored for Detroit.

Brian Rafalski had three assists and Jimmy Howard made 33 saves.

Andy McDonald had a goal and two assists, Brad Boyes a goal and an assist and Brad Winchester also scored for St. Louis. Jaroslav Halak stopped 24 shots.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Antti Miettinen scored at 3:36 of overtime and Niklas Backstrom made 27 saves, lifting Minnesota over Anaheim.

Martin Havlat also added a goal for the Wild, who have won five of their last seven games.

Teemu Selanne scored for the Ducks, who also lost 2-1 on Tuesday night at Dallas. Backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney stopped 25 shots for Anaheim.

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Martin Hanzal had a goal and an assist, Ilya Bryzgalov made 39 saves and Phoenix won its fourth straight.

The Flames outshot Phoenix 16-9 in the first period, but could not solve Bryzgalov, who made several big saves. Wojtek Wolski scored and Lauri Korpikoski added an empty-netter for Phoenix.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Jonathan Toews scored three goals and Marty Turco stopped 18 shots for the Blackhawks.

Patrick Sharp and Bryan Bickell also scored for the Blackhawks (10-9-2), who won for the first time in three tries against Edmonton this season.

The Oilers (4-10-3) have lost five in a row and have only two wins in their last 15 outings, both against Chicago. Edmonton has been outscored 30-8 in its last five games.

DENVER (AP) - Kevin Porter scored on a breakaway with 2:53 remaining in overtime and the Colorado Avalanche rallied for a win over San Jose.

Porter broke free from Sharks defenseman Kent Huskins and beat goalie Antero Niittymaki with a low shot as Porter was tumbling to the ice.

Trailing 3-1 midway through the third period, the Avalanche tied up the game on goals from Chris Stewart and Paul Stastny.

Kevin Shattenkirk also scored for the Avalanche, his first NHL goal. Peter Budaj finished with 40 saves, including a flurry in the closing seconds of regulation.

Logan Couture, Dan Boyle and Mike Moore added goals for the Sharks, who had their winning streak halted at three games.

Niittymaki wasn't tested often, facing just 22 shots.
