GMs shelve Tallon's idea of coach's challenge

TORONTO -- Dale Tallon's NFL-style idea of giving coaches one challenge per game in order to contest a disputed goal received little support among his fellow general managers Tuesday. Tallon called the idea "a dead issue" and hinted that he doesn't plan to bring it up again any time soon.

"That's the way it goes," Tallon said. "You win some, you lose some."

Tallon would have liked for his coach, Pete DeBoer, to have the opportunity to challenge Colton Orr's goal scored against the Panthers on Oct. 26 in Toronto. The on-ice officials ruled it a goal but video replays showed that Orr interfered with goalie Scott Clemmensen before the puck cross the goal line.

The goal turned out to be the game-winner in Toronto's 3-1 victory at Air Canada Centre.

Following that, Tallon's idea for a coach's challenge came out and picked up steam in the media. However, the GMs gave it a sour response Tuesday after having what Ottawa GM Bryan Murray called a "brief" discussion about it.

"Certainly there have been a couple of incidents we talked about but not enough to merit a rule change or a video review change that would lead to that opportunity," Murray said. "For now, shelved."
