The NHL's busiest day is followed by its quietest. With the League turning over the final day of October to the trick-or-treaters after a 14-game bonanza Saturday, it's a good time to take a look back at the numerical goings-on during the first month of the season:

0 -- Combined home victories by the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres, both of whom went 0-4-1 in their own buildings -- the only teams that didn't win at least once at home during October. One of the four home losses for each team came against the other.

1 -- Goals scored by teams while skating 3-on-5. Frans Nielsen of the New York Islanders scored on a penalty shot in Philadelphia on Saturday after being hauled down with his team playing two men short. It was one of four penalty-shot goals scored on the same night -- Florida's David Booth, the Rangers' Ryan Callahan and Washington's David Steckel also scored on penalty shots.

2 -- Shutouts against the Carolina Hurricanes in their two home games at the RBC Center. The  Canes, who started their season with two games in Helsinki and five more on the road, lost 3-0 to Washington in their home opener Oct. 27 and 2-0 to Pittsburgh three days later. Away from Raleigh, the Hurricanes have won five of eight games.

3 -- Goals allowed and shutouts by Boston goaltender Tim Thomas, who won all six of his starts during the season's first month -- tying a 73-year-old team record help by Tiny Thompson. Thomas finished the month with a goals-against average of 0.50.
 
4 -- Shorthanded goals allowed by the Colorado Avalanche, the most in the League.

5 -- Points by San Jose's Joe Thornton against New Jersey on Oct. 27, the most by any player in the League in one game this far this season. Thornton scored three times and set up goals by linemates Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau in the Sharks' 5-2 victory.

5 -- 2010 draft picks who made it through the month. The Islanders sent Nino Niederreiter back to junior Thursday, leaving Taylor Hall (Oilers), Tyler Seguin (Bruins), Jeff Skinner (Hurricanes), Alexander Burmistrov (Thrashers) and Cam Fowler (Ducks) as the five 18-year-olds who almost certainly will spend the season in the NHL.

6 -- Biggest margin of victory in any game. Florida routed Tampa Bay 6-0 on Oct. 16 in its home opener. That was one-quarter of the 24 goals the Panthers scored in their nine games in October.

7 -- Most goals scored by one team in a game--it happened three times. Washington got seven in a 7-2 victory against New Jersey on Oct. 9, Edmonton matched that total in its 7-4 victory at Chicago on Oct. 29, and the Caps put up seven again in their 7-2 win at Calgary on Saturday.

8 -- Games in which the New Jersey Devils trailed after two periods, more than any team in the NHL. They lost all eight.

10 -- League-leading goal total belonging to Chicago's Patrick Sharp. He finished the month one goal ahead of Colorado's Chris Stewart and Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos.

10 -- Number of times in their 11 games in which the Atlanta Thrashers were outshot. They were even in shots in the other game and did not outshoot an opponent all month. Every other team had at least one game in which it had more shots than its opponent.

11 -- Shootouts in the 156 games played in October. Projected over a 1,230-game season, there would be 90 shootouts, less than half of last season's total.

11 -- Most combined goals scored in a game. It happened twice -- on back-to-back nights. Colorado won 6-5 at Calgary on Oct. 28, and Edmonton was a 7-4 winner at Chicago the next night.

12 -- Appearances by New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur. He and Washington's Michal Neuvirth (11 games) were the only goaltenders to play in all of their team's games during October. Brodeur started 11 games and relieved Johan Hedberg in the other.

14 -- Power-play goals by the San Jose Sharks, who lead the League despite playing only nine games. The Sharks also have the NHL's best power-play percentage -- they've scored on 31.8 percent of their 44 chances.

19 -- Points by Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos, the most by any player in October. The No. 1 pick of the 2008 Entry Draft is on a pace that would see him put up nearly 160 points for a full season.

21 -- Second-period goals allowed by the New Jersey Devils, the most by any team in any period in October. The Devils were outscored 21-7 in the middle period -- and they've allowed more goals in the second period than they've scored in all three periods and overtime combined (20).

33 -- Games that went into overtime. Of those games, 22 (67 percent) were decided in the five-minute extra period; just one-third went to a shootout. Last season, just 39 percent of games that were tied after regulation were decided in OT; 61 percent went to the shootout.

122:24 -- Toronto's month-ending scoreless streak. The Leafs ended the month with back-to-back shutout losses to Boston and the New York Rangers. They finished the month on a 1-4-1 slide while scoring just seven goals in those six games.
