Blackhawks assign Huet to Swiss League team
Goaltender Cristobal Huet will spend the upcoming season playing for HC Fribourg-Gotteron of the Swiss National League A after being assigned to the team Monday by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Goaltender Cristobal Huet will spend the upcoming season playing for HC Fribourg-Gotteron of the Swiss National League A after being assigned to the team Monday by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Huet, 35, began last season as the starter for the Blackhawks but eventually lost the job to Antti Niemi, who led the team to its first Stanley Cup championship in 49 years. Huet went 26-14-4 with a 2.50 goals-against average and .895 save percentage during the regular season but played just 20 minutes during the playoffs.

Salary cap concerns were a significant factor in the Blackhawks looking to shed Huet's contract. They also walked away from an arbitration awarding to Niemi and will begin this season with Marty Turco as their starting goaltender.

Huet, a seventh-round pick of Los Angeles in the 2001 Entry Draft, has played 272 career regular-season games for the Kings, Canadiens, Capitals and Blackhawks, posting a 129-90-21 record with 11 ties, a 2.46 GAA and a .913 save percentage. In 17 career playoff games, he's 6-10 with a 2.68 GAA and .918 save percentage.
