Poti signs two-year extension with Capitals
The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Tom Poti to a two-year contract extension.
The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Tom Poti to a two-year contract extension. Terms of the deal were not released, but according to TSN, the deal will play Poti $5.75 million -- $3 million this season, $2.75 million in 2011-12.

The extension starts next July, when the final season of his current deal expires.

"Tom has played very well for the Washington Capitals and has been a key part of our success since he joined the team," said Capitals GM George McPhee. "We are pleased that he has made the commitment to remain a Capital."

Poti, 33, had 4 goals, 24 assists and a plus-26 rating in 70 games with the Capitals last season, and added 4 assists and a team-best plus-9 rating in seven playoff games against the Canadiens.

"I wanted to be here, and they showed they wanted me to be here," Poti said. "It's easy to play going into next year not worrying about a contract. I'm excited about the core group we have here, and I think we have the ability to win the Stanley Cup -- not just this year for but for years to come."

In three seasons with the Caps, Poti has 9 goals, 66 points and a plus-38 rating.

Originally a 1996 third-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers, Poti has 67 goals and 318 points in 787 games over 11 seasons with the Oilers, Rangers, Islanders and Capitals.
