The Atlanta Thrashers have signed free-agent defenseman Freddy Meyer to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but TSN is reporting the two-way deal would pay Meyer $500,000 if he plays in the NHL, $105,000 if he's in the AHL.

Meyer, 29, played a career-best 64 games last season with the New York Islanders, totaling 4 goals and 15 points.

The 5-foot-10, 192-pound native of Sanbornville, N.H., has 19 goals and 71 points in 266 NHL games with the Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Phoenix Coyotes.

For me, it's a great win for our hockey team and for a lot of people back in Columbus, especially our fans in particular … people who have been devoted to this organization, it's big.
