Carcillo re-signs, hopes to flash more offense
Daniel Carcillo enjoys proving he's more than a one-dimensional player, that he's capable of keeping his gloves on and scoring goals as well as dropping them to fight.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Tuesday that they have signed Carcillo to a new one-year contract, the terms of which were not disclosed.

"We are happy to have Dan under contract for the 2010-11 season," General Manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement.

Carcillo, 25, had 12 goals and 22 points, along with 207 penalty minutes, in 76 regular-season games this past season. He led the team with 194 hits, and his 207 penalty minutes led the Flyers and ranked fourth in the NHL.

Carcillo added 2 goals and 6 points along with 34 PIM in 17 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to help lead the Flyers to the Final. One of his goals came in overtime to give the Flyers a 3-2 win against New Jersey in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on April 18.

"I just want to make sure I'm always in control and that when I get on the ice I can be effective," Carcillo said during a conference call. "I always want to put more points up and score more goals, and that's something I'm going to focus more on this year and hopefully help the team more that way."

Earlier this month, the Flyers signed Jody Shelley, a reputable enforcer. A question was posed as to whether Shelley's addition would free up Carcillo from some fighting duties and allow him to concentrate more on his offensive game.

"I hope so," he said. "You always want to contribute more offensively and that's something I tried to focus on this year, and hopefully I can put more pucks in the net next year."

The Flyers acquired Carcillo on March 4, 2009, from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Scottie Upshall and a second-round draft pick in 2011, Carcillo has 12 goals and 26 points, plus 287 PIM, in 96 regular-season games as a Flyer, as well as 3 goals and 8 points with 39 PIM in 22 playoff games.

After coming within two wins of lifting the Stanley Cup this past season, Carcillo is eager to get started again.

"We got a bunch of core guys coming back and we added some veterans," he said. "September is not far away and I'm excited to get started."

For his career, Carcillo has 32 goals, 67 points and 859 PIM in 225-regular-season games with the Coyotes and Flyers. The native of King City, Ont., was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round (No. 73) in the 2003 Entry Draft.
