So who won at the 2010 Draft?

Another Entry Draft has hit the books and now we begin the inevitable look at who won and lost, even though such designations are daffy when talking about 18-year-old kids.

Obviously the Oilers and Bruins as pleased as punch with Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin, a couple forwards who very well may play in the NHL next season. Oilers fans won because adding Hall to some of the other young players coming down the pipeline for the Oilers gives the fans hope.

You have to consider the Florida Panthers winners as GM Dale Tallon wasted no time putting his plan into effect. Not only did he clear salary cap room with the trades of Nathan Horton and Keith Ballard, but Tallon added a literal ton of prospects by wheeling and dealing with so many draft picks.

The Carolina Hurricanes also had a lot of picks, added to their youthful core and may have gotten a defenseman for next season in Bobby Sanguinetti, whose path to the NHL was blocked in New York.

American hockey may well be the biggest winner of the Draft with so many American-born players taken and the National Development Team Program had a slew of players selected further cemented the impact of that program.

Belated Father's Day gift

The Flyers gave team president Peter Luukko a belated Father's Day gift in the sixth round, selecting his son, Nicholas, who played for The Gunnery School in Connecticut. He is a 6-foot-2 defenseman who was ranked 175th by Central Scouting.

Quenneville: change inevitable

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville told ESPN Chicago that the trades that saw Dustin Byfuglien and other leave the Hawks so soon after winning the Stanley Cup are now just part of the business.

"Whether it's tough or not, it's the reality of the business," Quenneville said. "Things will change. It's not necessarily hockey trades. They're business trades.

"You look at the core and nucleus and it's in place," Quenneville said. "We'll have to get younger. It's not going to be the same, but the core is there."

"Just a quick note regarding the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and the number of American players selected.

"A record 11 Americans were selected in the first round last night, with a record-tying 21 Americans selected in the first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft.

"The previous first-round record was 10 set in both 2006 and 2007, while the record for Americans selected in the first two rounds was initially set in 2007.

"USA Hockey does not use birthplace as the criteria for considering a player American, but rather his development roots."

The source of the discrepancy is defenseman Cam Fowler, who was born in Canada, but moved to the United States as a toddler.

Panthers own the Draft

Another interest nugget for the NHL's Greg Inglis. The Panthers had 10 of the first 99 selections, as new GM Dale Tallon starts rebuilding in a hurry.

Multiple picks in Round 5

The Ducks, Sharks, Avalanche, Capitals and Thrashers each have two selections in Round 5, with the Maple Leafs having just traded their second fifth-round pick to the Ducks to give them two in the round.

Canes turning picks into players

The Carolina Hurricanes came to the 2010 Entry Draft armed with 11 picks, tied with Chicago for most heading into the Draft. In one confirmed deal and another being reported by the New York Post, some of those picks are becoming players.

In the confirmed deal Saturday, Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford traded the 46th pick to the Edmonton Oilers for prospect Riley Nash, 21, who just finished his third season at Cornell.

According to the Post, the Hurricanes acquired defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti from the New York Rangers for a package of undisclosed draft picks.

Hard day's night

Credit for this factoid goes to Craig Custance of The Sporting News. Goalie Scott Wedgewood, who was the 19th-ranked North American goalie, went to New Jersey in Round 3 over a slew of other goalies.

Why? Perhaps making 71 saves in an OHL playoff game between Windsor (Taylor Hall) and Plymouth (Tyler Seguin) had something to do with it.

This just in from Greg Inglis of the League public relations staff: A total of 21 American-born players have been selected in the first two rounds of the draft. They were born in 11 different states -- California, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Washington.

Islanders take Kabanov

The Islanders selected Kirill Kabanov at No. 65. He had been ranked 31st by Central Scouting, but a troubled season saw him miss the first month of the Quebec League season as Moncton tried to gain his rights from his Russian team. He then lost three months to a broken wrist and finally, left Moncton during the playoffs to return to Russia to play in the World U-18 tournament, where he was soon released from the team.

Talented kid, but call him a project.

The Maple Leafs have picked up the No. 43 pick from the Blackhawks in exchange for an undisclosed pick. GM Brian Burke had indicated he wanted to move up and give his scouts a chance to make some selections after missing out on the first round.

The Leafs took Portland Winterhawks left wing Bradley Ross.

California laid back? Not so much

Even on Day 2 the Kings fans are hooting and jeering Anaheim Duck selections and Ducks fans then erupt into cheers for their team. Who says there is no rivalry here.

And for those scoring at home, the four guys in the orange tuxedoes are nowhere in sight today. Kinda disappointing.

The pace of the picks is as predicted earlier. If I was trying to go pick by pick like last night I would have terminal carpal tunnel at this point.

The Oilers nab Tyler Pitlick at No. 31. He is the nephew of former NHLer Lance Pitlick.

Bruins takes Jared Knight from London. He's a center.

Jarred Tinordi, the Canadiens' first pick Friday night, is at the Montreal table wearing his Canadiens jersey.

Interesting players still available

The first round creates the most interest at the Entry Draft for sure, but a lot of teams make hay on Day 2. Check through some of the past drafts here and see all the players from latter rounds who have gone on to terrific careers.

Still available as the Day 2 begins Saturday morning is 15th-ranked John McFarland from the Sudbury Wolves, as well as Ottawa center Tyler Toffoli, ranked 16th by NHL Central Scouting. The 18th-ranked North American skater, center Tyler Pitlick, remains available, as does top North American goalie Calvin Pickard. There are more too, so Day 2 bears watching.

Day 2 at the Entry Draft

Hockey is the fastest game on Earth, but the second day of the Entry Draft is a close second. There are six rounds today and there is the possibility that things will conclude by early afternoon here in Los Angeles.

Why? A lot of the pomp and circumstance -- photos on the draft stage, TV interviews as the player emerges from the stands, etc, aren't in play and Day 2 is more of a day for the scouts, as their lists become paramount as to who gets selected. This is where their hard work during the season comes into play as players who didn't receive media notoriety during the season see a dream realized because of a scout's eye.
