Byers, 24, skated in five games with the Rangers last season, recording 1 goal and 31 penalty minutes. He notched his first career NHL goal in his season debut on Oct. 30 at Minnesota. Byers spent most of the season with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League, recording 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points along with 100 penalty minutes in 74 games.
The Rangers selected Byers in the second round (No. 48) in the 2004 Entry Draft.
I downplayed the first one because I thought it's just a hockey game. We just want to win the game; it's against our rival and we want the two points. I downplayed it, but now having gone through the first one I look back and say, 'Geez, that was really cool.' I think as I've grown a bit older I've got a lot more appreciation for what we're allowed to do every day.
