Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final often is a feeling-out process, with two teams that rarely meet during the regular season getting used to each other. Someone forgot to tell that to the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks in Game 1 Saturday.

The Flyers and Hawks combined for five goals in the opening period, with the Flyers skating off with a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes. That's the most goals scored in the first period of Game 1 in the Stanley Cup Final since 1982, when the New York Islanders outscored Vancouver 3-2 in the first period. The Isles went on to win that game 6-5 in overtime.

The last time five goals were scored in the first period of any Stanley Cup game was June 14, 2006, when Edmonton outscored Carolina 3-2 in the opening period of Game 5. That game also went to overtime, with the Oilers winning 4-3 on a shorthanded goal by Fernando Pisani.

There haven't been more than five goals scored in a period since Game 5 in 1994, when Vancouver and New York Rangers combined to score eight times -- five of them by the Canucks in a 6-3 victory.
