Canadiens' success captivates Quebec

The Montreal Canadiens are advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals against the winner of Friday's Game 7 between the Flyers and Bruins in Boston (8 p.m. ET, VERSUS, TSN, RDS).

Here is a look at some of what is being said in Montreal about the Canadiens in both English and French.

Dave Stubbs, The Gazette -- In this age of environmental awareness, the Canadiens chose not to fly home to Montreal last night aboard a jet.

They rode a magic carpet.

Was there a better way to travel after this team's second consecutive supernatural, seven-game series win? Not that the Canadiens' rug wasn't buffeted by more than a little turbulence en route to their dramatic 5-2 Game 7 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. ....

Now, this remarkable team savours the victory in and around a city that has gone truly quite mad. And it waits for the winner of the Bruins-Flyers series, which goes to Game 7 tomorrow. ....

There was another benchmark, one more abstract: which team would better manage its sweaty palms and shortness of breath? That would be the Canadiens, a team that perhaps we should stop calling improbable or Cinderella or even an underdog. A team to which we should stop attaching any label that downplays a fiercely proud group that has never doubted its belief in itself.

Key number: 8. The number of games Canadiens must win for their 25th Stanley Cup. ....

The Canadiens won most of the battles, killed off five penalties, blocked 26 shots to three for the Penguins and continued to frustrate Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. While Michael Cammalleri had seven goals in this series, Crosby and Malkin finished the series with one each.

Eric Duhatschek, The Globe and Mail -- In the Montreal Canadiens' long pantheon of playoff success, every unexpected triumph usually develops its own little shorthand to mark the occasion. A reference to '71 usually conjures up images and memories of Ken Dryden's extraordinary goaltending performance. The years '86 and '93 recall heroic work from Patrick Roy.

And now, halfway through a most extraordinary and unforeseen playoff run, it looks as if the spring of '10 could go down in Canadiens' history as the Year of the Smurf.

It may not be as catchy as the Flying Frenchmen, but it is hard to dispute the impact of Montreal's dogged little men, from Michael Cammalleri to Brian Gionta with a little Scott Gomez and Tomas Plekanec thrown in.

Jean-François Bégin, La Presse -- Ses performances ne devraient étonner personne, même si son expérience en séries avant cette saison se limitait à six parties avec les Flames de Calgary, l'an dernier. Comme me le soulignait son père Leo cet hiver, Cammalleri a grandi dans la Metro Toronto Hockey League (MTHL), la mini-Ligue nationale de Toronto. La pression, il connaît ça depuis l'âge de 9 ans. «Il n'y a pas de meilleur endroit pour lui que Montréal, où le hockey est une religion», me disait hier l'Ontarien Guy Dion, qui l'a dirigé pendant cinq ans à l'adolescence. «Du hockey, il en mange. C'est une partie de plaisir pour lui. Il aime vraiment jouer et s'entraîner.»

François Gagnon, La Presse -- Le Canadien est devenu la sixième équipe seulement dans l'histoire de la LNH à remporter deux séries de sept matchs sur la route dans un même printemps.

Le quatrième club à réaliser cet exploit lors de deux séries de suite.

Encore hier, le Canadien s'est contenté de trois tirs dans une période.

C'est la sixième fois que cela lui arrive depuis le début des séries. Sa fiche en pareille circonstance : cinq victoires, un revers.

On ne rit plus…

Et on ne pourra plus rire du Canadien. ...

Après une finale de la coupe Stanley il y a deux ans, après une coupe Stanley l'an dernier, les Penguins visaient rien de moins que le gros trophée encore cette année.

Mais les champions sont ce matin détrônés.

Sidney Crosby n'a pas su s'imposer face à Halak, il a laissé ses frustrations prendre le dessus sur son jeu et la fatigue a sans doute contribué au fait qu'il n'a été que l'ombre de lui-même.

Il faut donner le crédit qui revient à Halak et à la défensive du Canadien pour avoir réussi à éteindre Crosby comme le Canadien l'a fait.

Michel Bergeron, RDS -- Héros du match : Jaroslav Halak. Il est certainement le joueur le plus utile à son équipe depuis le début des séries. Plusieurs spécialistes disent même qu'il est le meilleur gardien de style papillon depuis un certain Patrick Roy!

Les partisans ont-ils le droit de rêver? : Les partisans ont certainement le droit de rêver à une participation à la finale de la coupe Stanley. Le Canadien forme une bien meilleure équipe que les Bruins et les Flyers.

Bertrand Raymond, RDS -- Graduellement, ils sont devenus des frères. Or, que fait-on quand un frère est en difficulté? On se porte à son secours, on l'aide à se relever, on souffre avec lui et on gagne à ses côtés. Voilà pourquoi ils sont en train de vous faire rêver à la coupe, celle qu'on attend depuis 17 ans et qu'on pensait ne pas revoir de notre vivant au Québec.
