MANNHEIM, Germany - Ray Whitney is taking over for Captain Canada.
The veteran forward will wear the 'C' at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, replacing the injured Ryan Smyth. The 38-year-old Whitney is the team's oldest player and has appeared in 662 more NHL games than the next most experienced guy on the squad. He is also appearing in his fourth world championship.
Smyth, nicknamed Captain Canada while wearing the 'C' between 2001 and 2005, fractured his left ankle during a drill in practice and had to leave the team.
Canada plays its third game at the tournament against Switzerland later in the day.
