GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Phoenix captain Shane Doan did not take part in the pregame warmup Friday night and will miss the pivotal Game 5 of the Coyotes' Western Conference Quarterfinal series with the Detroit Red Wings due to an undisclosed upper body injury.
Doan was injured in the first shift of the second period in Game 3 on Sunday in Detroit and has not played since. He returned to the ice Thursday and took part in about half the practice, avoiding any contact on the right shoulder that appeared to take the brunt of the impact when he fell and crashed into the end boards attempting to avoid prone Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard.
As expected, veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider will make his debut in the series for Phoenix, who will dress seven defensemen in Game 5. Center Robert Lang, who saw limited action in Games 3 and 4 after missing six weeks due to injury, is a scratch.
We've got to find a way to win a game. He's played well in the minors, now he gets his opportunity. We tried [with Jonathan Bernier]. The way I look at it, you get opportunities and you make the most of it. That's what [James Reimer] did. Now another opportunity is here and Sparks ... you gotta grab it. Is he ready? We'll find out.
