Fog makes for a long night for Caps

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Washington defenseman Joe Corvo was so tired early Thursday afternoon that he didn't even realize the irony of what he said.
 
"I didn't get to bed until 5 a.m.," Corvo groggily said. "I'm a little foggy today."
 
Foggy was the appropriate word, considering a strong fog is the reason Corvo was so exhausted, and the reason why coach Bruce Boudreau cancelled their scheduled noon practice.
 
The Capitals' charter flight from Montreal after Game 4 was supposed to land around 1 a.m. at Dulles International Airport, but they couldn't land there due to fog. They were re-routed to Reagan National Airport, but again, the fog was too thick for the plane to land.
 
Finally, the Capitals were able to touch down at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, but they still had to clear customs and the desk at BWI was not supposed to open until 6 a.m.
 
The Capitals thought they were going to have to sit on the parked plane for five hours, but the airport personnel were able to get customs agents to BWI shortly before 4 a.m. Still, the team had to sit on the plane for nearly three hours.
 
"That was rough," Corvo said.
 
When the Capitals finally cleared customs, they found themselves just south of Baltimore, which without traffic is about an hour drive from Dulles in Chantilly, Va. The players hopped in cabs and either went straight home or went to get their cars at Dulles.
 
"The fog rolled in, and I don't know if it was quick or not, because we didn't know it when we left Montreal," Boudreau said. "It was a long night. I got here (Kettler Capitals Iceplex) at noon, but I got home around 5:30 this morning."
 
Capitals right wing Eric Fehr said the players were "getting antsy, kind of chirping each other and making fun of each other" for about an hour before they finally settled back in their seats and tried to get some sleep.
 
"It was a pretty long night, but we made it through it and we're getting a good day off," Fehr said. "It's going to be good to get a little bit of sleep."
