The Philadelphia Flyers
and New York Rangers
took their regular season finale to the limit Sunday at the Wachovia Center with the Flyers advancing to the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 2-1 victory in a shootout where the Flyers outscored New York, 2-1.
Tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime, Danny Briere
, 14-for-33 lifetime in shootouts prior to his attempt, gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead, beating Henrik Lundqvist
with a rising shot to the glove side.
denied Erik Christensen
with a blocker save on New York's first attempt. Mike Richards
fired Philadelphia's second attempt wide of the net before rookie P.A. Parenteau got the call from coach John Tortorella and scored, lifting the puck over a sprawling Boucher to make it 1-1.
Another rookie, Philly's Claude Giroux
then made it 2-1 for the Flyers with a nifty stop-and-start move that froze Lundqvist and allowed Giroux to beat the Rangers' goalie through the 5-hole.
The Rangers' last hope came from Olli Jokinen
, who came in with speed, but his backhand shot caught just enough of Boucher's right pad to keep the puck out the net and the Rangers out of the playoffs.
