Friday's WHL Roundup

Jordan Weal and the Regina Pats bested their cellar-mates Friday night.

Weal scored twice to help Regina double the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-2 in Western Hockey League play. Weal opened scoring for Regina near the midway mark of the first when he tucked one under former Pat goalie Linden Rowat. With just over two minutes left in the frame Lethbridge answered back with two, both from Carter Bancks.

The first came on the power play when the Hurricane's captain worked his way out of the corner then turned and beat Regina goalie Dawson Guhle with a quick wrist shot from the top of the circle.

The other was an even-strength goal following a pretty feed from rookie Mitch Maxwell.

Midway through Carter Ashton banked a power-play goal in off Rowat.

Weal then struck with his second of the night, the eventual winner, in the dying seconds of the period. Regina's Tyler Parker added one more for the Pats in the third.

Elsewhere in the WHL it was Brandon 9 Moose Jaw 2; Medicine Hat 2 Kootenay 1; Red Deer 2 Swift Current 1 (OT); Chilliwack 4 Tri-City 1; Kamloops 6 Vancouver 1; Spokane 4 Portland 0; Everett 3 Prince George 2 and Kelowna 5 Seattle 0.

At Regina, Sask., Carter Ashton and Tyler Parker also had goals for the Pats (28-33-7).

Carter Bancks had a pair for Lethbridge (19-41-8).

Wheat Kings 9 Warriors 2

At Brandon, Man., the Wheat Kings scored five times in a span of six-and-a-half minutes on their way to a victory over Moose Jaw.

Scott Glennie scored two goals and set up two others for Brandon (46-18-4). Aaron Lewadniuk added a goal and three assists, while Matt Calvert, Brent Raedeke, Brayden Schenn, Colby Robak, Mike Ferland and Jordan Hale also scored.

Kevin Smith and Jason Bast replied for the Warriors (32-25-10).

Tigers 2 Ice 1

At Cranbrook, B.C., Wacey Hamilton had the winner as Medicine Hat edged Kootenay.

Joey Frazer had the other goal for the Tigers (37-23-8).

Jesse Ismond replied for the Ice (40-23-5).

Rebels 2 Broncos 1 (OT)

At Red Deer, Alta., Willie Coetzee's had the power-play winner to give the Rebels an overtime win over Swift Current.

Adam Kambeitz also scored for Red Deer (39-24-4).

Justin Dowling's power-play goal late in the third period tied the game for the Broncos (34-30-5).

Bruins 4 Americans 1

At Chilliwack, B.C., Jamie Crooks second period goal stood as the eventual winner as the Bruins downed Tri-City.

Roman Horak and Dylen McKinlay had markers for Chilliwack (30-31-6), while Colton Grant added an empty-net goal as insurance.

Johnny Lazo was the lone scorer for the Americans (45-19-3).

Blazers 6 Giants 1

At Kamloops, B.C., the Blazers scored three goals in each of the first two periods to triumph over Vancouver.

Chase Schaber, Ryan Hanes, Linden Saip, C.J. Stretch, Brendan Ranford and Mark Hall provided the offence for Kamloops (31-32-6).

Neil Manning had the lone goal for the Giants (39-23-5).

Chiefs 4 Winterhawks 0

At Portland, Ore., Mitch Wahl scored the first goal of the game and it was all Spokane needed to defeat the Winterhawks.

Kyle Beach scored his 49th goal of the year for Spokane (41-21-5), while Kenton Miller and Steve Kuhn also tallied.

Ian Curtis stopped 31 shots for Portland (40-25-3).

Silvertips 3 Cougars 2

At Prince George, B.C., Daniel Iwanski scored twice, including the winner, as Everett rallied to a win over the Cougars.

Shane Harper had the other goal for Everett (43-19-5).

Greg Fraser and Parker Stanfield gave Prince George (11-52-3) a 2-0 lead before the Silvertips' turnaround.

Rockets 5 Thunderbirds 0

At Kelowna, B.C., Mark Guggenberger made 16 saves as the Rockets downed Seattle.

Geordie Wudrick scored twice for Kelowna (32-30-6), while Brandon McMillan, Evan Bloodoff and Brett Bulmer also tallied.

Calvin Pickard stopped 27 shots for Seattle (17-37-5) before being replaced by Michael Salmon who made seven saves on as many chances.
