Sabres acquire Torres from Blue Jackets

The Buffalo Sabres have added to their forward corps by acquiring Raffi Torres from the Columbus Blue Jackets, according to multiple media outlets.

In return for Torres, the Blue Jackets will receive defenseman Nathan Paetsch and a 2010 second-round draft pick that originally belonged to the  Vancouver Canucks.

"We feel that with the addition of Raffi, it's allowed us to get a little bigger on the wall," said Sabres GM Darcy Regier. "He's got good playoff experience, he's been to the (Stanley Cup) Final. He's something we think fits into this group of forwards."

"I'm excited," Torres said in a phone interview with TSN. "They've got a playoff group, and I'm just hoping to come out there and help them along the way."

Torres, 28, has 19 goals and 31 points in 60 games this season. He'll add to an offense that hasn't produced more than two goals just four times in the past eight games, during which they've gone 1-5-2.

He also brings a physical element Sabres GM Darcy Regier liked.

"He's only 6 feet (and 218 pounds), but he's a big body out there," said Regier. "Skates very well, shoots the puck, goes into the paint, will play in the hard areas. That fits well with our hockey club."

The fifth pick of the 2000 Entry Draft by the New York Islanders, Torres has 98 goals and 177 points in 418 games with the Islanders, Oilers and Blue Jackets.

He also had 11 points in 22 games with the Oilers as they made the 2006 Stanley Cup Final.

Paetsch has 2 points in 11 games this season.
