A game-by-game look at Team Canada's run to Olympic gold

The Canadians did their country proud at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, edging the United States 3-2 in overtime on Sunday to win the gold medal. NHL.com takes a look at the road Canada took to win the tournament for the second time in eight years:

Preliminary Round
Tuesday, Feb. 16 -- Canada 8, Norway 0
The Canadians make a tremendous opening statement with a rout of Norway. Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla came flying out of the gate with a hat trick, while San Jose Sharks forward Dany Heatley scored twice. Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo stopped all 15 shots he faced for the shutout. 

Thursday, Feb. 18 -- Canada 3, Switzerland 2 (SO)
Switzerland gives the Canadians a huge scare, but Canada survives with a shootout victory. Olympic rules allows for teams to use the same shooter more than once in the breakaway competition, and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby scored once to clinch the victory for Canada. New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur stopped all four shots he faced in the shootout.

Sunday, Feb. 21 -- United States 5, Canada 3
An entire country is stunned as the U.S. scored in the first minute and beat Brodeur four times on 22 shots. The loss prompts Canada coach Mike Babcock to replace Brodeur with Luongo for the remainder of the tournament. Eric Staal, Heatley and Crosby scored the goals for Canada.

Qualifying Round
Tuesday, Feb. 23 -- Canada 8, Germany 2
Iginla scored twice and Staal had three assists as Canada cruised past Germany, setting up a dream matchup against Russia. Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith also had two assists, while Luongo made 21 saves in the win.

Quarterfinals
Wednesday, Feb 24 -- Canada 7, Russia 3
Some predicted the two countries would meet to determine the gold-medal winner. Instead, Canada pummels the Russians in the quarterfinals, as Ryan Getzlaf scored the first of four Canadian goals in the opening period. Corey Perry and Shea Weber scored less than a minute apart earlier in the second period and chased San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov. The Canadians held Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin to just three shots on goal.

Medal Round
Friday, Feb. 26 -- Canada 3, Slovakia 2
In a game to determine one-half of the gold-medal match, the Canadians jump out to a 3-0 lead, then hang on in the third period to edge the surprising Slovaks. Michal Handzus made it 3-2 with 4:53 remaining, but Slovakia failed to notch the equalizer. Getzlaf had a goal and an assist in the victory, while Luongo made 19 saves.

Gold Medal
Sunday, Feb. 28 -- Canada 3, United States 2, OT
The Canadians get their revenge on the U.S. as Crosby scores 7:40 into sudden-death overtime to give his country the gold medal for the second time in eight years. Canada avoided what would have been a devastating loss after Zach Parise scored in the final minute to erase a 2-1 lead.
