Talk about a sense of urgency! With the NHL roster freeze for the Olympics lifted March 1, all 30 NHL general managers will shift into over-drive to figure out how to better their team in a big hurry.
 
Why? The trade deadline is just days away, Wednesday, March 3 at 3 p.m. ET.
 
While no trades were permitted during the freeze, that doesn't mean phone calls weren't made and ideas weren't exchanged.

Here's NHL.com's look at what could come over the next few days:

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Atlanta Thrashers -- Ilya Kovalchuk took a lot of goals out the door with him, so another scorer would be nice. But don't expect GM Don Waddell to use too many of his young assets to get one.

UFA in 2010: Evgeny Artyukhin, Vyacheslav Kozlov, Colby Armstrong, Jim Slater, Maxim Afinogenov, Eric Boulton, Pavel Kubina, Christoph Schubert, Mark Popovic, Johan Hedberg.

RFA in 2010: Bryan Little, Niclas Bergfors, Ondrej Pavelec.

Boston Bruins -- The Bruins, the lowest-scoring team in the League, needs scoring in a major way. They come out of the break with a playoff spot, but more offense will go a long way in cementing that position.

UFA in 2010: Mark Recchi, Steve Begin, Miroslav Satan, Shawn Thornton, Derek Morris, Andrew Ference.

RFA in 2010: Blake Wheeler, Daniel Paille, Vladimir Sobotka, Mark Stuart, Johnny Boychuk, Adam McQuaid.

Buffalo Sabres -- Some grit and muscle on offense and defense could help a team that seems to have lost its way a bit. Also needed is a backup goalie coach Lindy Ruff has confidence in so Ryan Miller doesn't run out of gas.

UFA in 2010: Mike Grier, Adam Mair, Matt Ellis, Toni Lydman, Henrik Tallinder, Nathan Paetsch, Patrick Lalime.

RFA in 2010: Clarke McArthur, Tim Kennedy, Patrick Kaleta.

Carolina Hurricanes -- The Hurricanes won five straight heading into the break, but they're still nine points out of a playoff spot, so they'll likely be looking to sell. 

UFA in 2010: Ray Whitney, Scott Walker, Stephane Yelle, Michael Ryan, Joe Corvo, Aaron Ward, Jay Harrison, Tim Conboy, Manny Legace.

RFA in 2010: Jiri Tlusty, Steven Goertzen, Jerome Samson, Brett Carson, Alexandre Picard, Justin Peters.

Florida Panthers -- Winless in six leading into the break, GM Randy Sexton has thrown out the "For Sale" sign on his roster. He already sent Dominic Moore to Montreal and Jordan Leopold to Pittsburgh, but those likely won't be the only moves.

UFA in 2010: Steve MacIntyre, Dennis Seidenberg.

RFA in 2010: Gregory Campbell, Nick Tarnasky, Kamil Kreps, Kenndal McArdle, Mike Duco, Jason Garrison.

Montreal Canadiens -- New GM Pierre Gauthier will get the chance to put his stamp on the organization. The biggest question facing him is what he'll do with the goaltending situation.

UFA in 2010: Tomas Plekanec, Glen Metropolit, Dominic Moore, Mathieu Darche, Paul Mara, Marc-Andre Bergeron, Curtis Sanford.

RFA in 2010: Maxim Lapierre, Sergei Kostitsyn, Benoit Pouliot, Matt D'Agostini, Tom Pyatt, Carey Price, Jaroslav Halak.

New Jersey Devils -- The Devils seemed to have made their move by grabbing Ilya Kovalchuk. If GM Lou Lamoriello makes another deal, it likely would be for a veteran defenseman and perhaps a veteran backup goalie.

UFA in 2010: Ilya Kovalchuk, Rob Niedermayer, Dean McAmmond, Paul Martin, Mike Mottau, Cory Murphy, Yann Danis.

RFA in 2010: David Clarkson, Rod Pelley, Mark Fraser, Tyler Eckford.

New York Islanders -- They'll likely get lots of calls on their goaltending situation, but otherwise GM Garth Snow seems content to let his young core mature. He's shown more interest in adding pieces during the summer than at the trade deadline.

UFA in 2010: Doug Weight, Jon Sim, Richard Park, Tim Jackman, Andy Sutton, Freddy Meyer, Martin Biron.

RFA in 2010: Sean Bergenheim, Rob Schremp, Jeff Tambellini, Matt Moulson, Andrew McDonald.

New York Rangers -- They already added Olli Jokinen to help their anemic offense, and more could be in the works. They're right at the salary cap ceiling, so any move would have to be equal on the dollar side.

UFA in 2010: Olli Jokinen, Vinny Prospal, Aaron Voros, Jody Shelley, Stephen Valiquette.

RFA in 2010: Enver Lisin, Erik Christensen, Brandon Prust, Daniel Girardi, Marc Staal, Matt Zaba.

Ottawa Senators -- One of the hottest teams in the League, the Senators added Matt Cullen for depth and special teams play. More bulk on the back end could be a desired commodity.

UFA in 2010: Matt Cullen, Shean Donovan, Ryan Shannon, Anton Volchenkov, Mike Brodeur.

RFA in 2010: Nick Foligno, Peter Regin, Jesse Winchester, Chris Campoli, Brian Lee.

Philadelphia Flyers -- With Ray Emery a question mark, a playoff-tested goaltender seems to be a big need, despite how well Michael Leighton has played. Like many other contending teams, though, the Flyers are bumping at the top of the salary ceiling.

UFA in 2010: Arron Asham, Mika Pyorala, Lukas Krajicek, Ray Emery, Michael Leighton.

RFA in 2010: Daniel Carcillo, Darroll Powe, Ryan Parent, Braydon Coburn, Danny Syvret.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- The Pens always seem to be looking for a winger to play with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The right fit there also could spark their surprisingly inconsistent power play.

UFA in 2010: Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Matt Cooke, Sergei Gonchar, Jay McKee, Mark Eaton, Martin Skoula, Brent Johnson, Jordan Leopold.

RFA in 2010: Kris Letang.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- With the playoffs a possibility, GM Brian Lawton could be very active. Another top-six forward could be at the top of his list, as could a puck-moving defenseman.

UFA in 2010: Alex Tanguay, Jeff Halpern, Stephane Veilleux, Zenon Konopka, Brandon Bochenski, Mark Parrish, David Hale, Kurtis Foster, Antero Niittymaki.

RFA in 2010: Steve Downie, Mike Lundin, Nate Thompson, Paul Szczechura, Paul Ranger.

Toronto Maple Leafs -- GM Brian Burke said he's still "open for business." He's looking to subtract after making big additions last month in Dion Phaneuf and Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

UFA in 2010: Lee Stempniak, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Wayne Primeau, Rickard Wallin, Jamie Lundmark, Mike Van Ryn, Garnet Exelby, Joey MacDonald.

RFA in 2010: Nikolai Kulemin, John Mitchell, Christian Hanson, Jonas Gustavsson.

Washington Capitals -- After watching his team scorched for at least five goals in three of their four games before the break, GM George McPhee could use a forward who shows defensive responsibility. A physical presence on defense also wouldn't hurt.

UFA in 2010: Brendan Morrison, Quintin Laing, Brian Pothier, Shaone Morrisonn, Jose Theodore.

RFA in 2010: Nicklas Backstrom, Eric Fehr, Boyd Gordon, Tomas Fleishmann, Jeff Schultz, Michal Neuvirth.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Anaheim Ducks -- A veteran team that looks ready to shift into rebuilding mode, they seem to have a few chips who could expedite that process.

UFA in 2010: Saku Koivu, Teemu Selanne, Scott Niedermayer, Sheldon Brookbank, Nick Boynton, Vesa Toskala.

RFA in 2010: Bobby Ryan, Kyle Chipchura, James Wisniewski, Brendan Mikkelson, Justin Pogge.

Calgary Flames -- The Flames feel comfortable with Matt Stajan centering Jarome Iginla, but that likely won't stop GM Darryl Sutter from looking for another top-six forward.

UFA in 2010: Craig Conroy, Christopher Higgins, Eric Nystrom, Brian McGrattan, Jamal Mayers, Aaron Johnson.

RFA in 2010: Dustin Boyd, Ian White.

Chicago Blackhawks -- The Blackhawks seem to be involved with any top available player, but their salary cap situation makes any big-ticket items look very improbable. Also, their locker room is one of the closest in the League; GM Stan Bowman likely is very hesitant to mess with that.

UFA in 2010: John Madden, Adam Burish, Kim Johnsson.

RFA in 2010: Andrew Ladd, Ben Eager, Colin Stuart, Bryan Bickell, Jack Skille, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Jordan Hendry.

Columbus Blue Jackets -- The Olympic break came at the worst time for the Jackets, who looked to be on the upswing under new coach Claude Noel. They're likely to be sellers, but don't expect them to be too active -- most of the core of last season's playoff team should remain in place.

UFA in 2010: Fredrik Modin, Raffi Torres, Milan Jurcina.

RFA in 2010: Anton Stralman, Mathieu Roy.

Colorado Avalanche -- Can the kids hold on? That's the question rookie GM Greg Sherman has to ask himself between now and March 3. A veteran top-six forward would blend well with their youngsters up front, but don't look for Sherman to spend too heavily.

UFA in 2010: Darcy Tucker, Marek Svatos, David Koci, Matt Hendricks, Ryan Stoa, Brian Willsie, Brett Clark, Ruslan Salei, Adam Foote, Peter Budaj.

RFA in 2010: Wojtek Wolski, Chris Stewart, Brandon Yip, T.J. Hensick, Kyle Quincey.

Dallas Stars -- GM Joe Nieuwendyk will have to decide quickly if his team is a playoff contender or if he should start moving assets -- likely starting with goalie Marty Turco.

UFA in 2010: Mike Modano, Jere Lehtinen, Krys Barch, Toby Peterson, Marty Turco, Alex Auld.

RFA in 2010: Fabian Brunnstrom, James Neal, Tom Wandell, Raymond Sawada, Nicklas Grossman, Matt Niskanen, Kari Lehtonen.

Detroit Red Wings -- Don't expect the Wings to be too active at the deadline. With so many injured players finally healthy -- Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jason Williams, Niklas Kronwall, etc. -- it's been like making a few trades without giving up anything.

UFA in 2010: Tomas Holmstrom, Todd Bertuzzi, Jason Williams, Kirk Maltby, Brad May, Kris Newbury, Nicklas Lidstrom, Andreas Lilja, Brett Lebda, Doug Janik.

RFA in 2010: Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, Derek Meech, Jakub Kindl, Ole-Kristian Tollefsen.

Edmonton Oilers -- Much like Florida, there looks to be "make your best offer" feel to the Oilers, with owner Darryl Katz recently saying he expects changes.

UFA in 2010: Fernando Pisani, Mike Comrie, Jason Strudwick.

RFA in 2010: Sam Gagner, Andrew Cogliano, Marc Pouliot, Gilbert Brule, Ryan Stone, Jean-Francois Jacques, Ryan Potulny, Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, Devan Dubnyk.

Los Angeles Kings -- GM Dean Lombardi has to decide how much of the organizational depth he's so carefully cultivated he's willing to part with to get another veteran defenseman.

UFA in 2010: Alexander Frolov, Raitis Ivanans, Randy Jones, Sean O'Donnell.

RFA in 2010: Teddy Purcell, Brad Richardson, Scott Parse, Richard Clune.

Minnesota Wild -- In a transition season the Wild have been inconsistent, and likely will move out some parts. And with youngster Anton Khudobin's emergence, they could have an available goaltender.

UFA in 2010: Owen Nolan, Eric Belanger, Petr Sykora, Derek Boogaard, Andrew Ebbett, Shane Hnidy, John Scott, Clayton Stoner, Wade Dubielewicz.

RFA in 2010: James Sheppard, Guillaume Latendresse, Robbie Earl, Josh Harding, Anton Khudobin.

Nashville Predators -- They could be sellers, but still make the playoffs. With a goalie and a top-four defenseman set to become unrestricted free agents, they could make a few moves that help for today as well as the future.

UFA in 2010: Wade Belak, Dave Scatchard, Ben Guite, Dan Hamhuis, Francis Bouillon, Nolan Yonkman, Dan Ellis.

RFA in 2010: Patric Hornqvist, Cody Franson, Denis Grebeshkov.

Phoenix Coyotes -- With Scottie Upshall's knee injury, GM Don Maloney could use a big-time scorer on the wing.

UFA in 2010: Matthew Lombardi, Robert Lang, Taylor Pyatt, Joel Perreault, Adrian Aucoin, Zbynek Michalek, Anders Eriksson,

RFA in 2010: Peter Mueller, Scottie Upshall, Martin Hanzal, Daniel Winnik, Paul Bissonnette, Kevin Porter, Sami Lepisto.

San Jose Sharks -- If they do anything, it will be to add depth. Getting Niclas Wallin addressed any needs they might have had on the blue line.

UFA in 2010: Patrick Marleau, Scott Nichol, Manny Malhotra, Jed Ortmeyer, Rob Blake, Niclas Wallin, Jay Leach, Evgeni Nabokov.

RFA in 2010: Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi, Brad Staubitz.

St. Louis Blues -- If the team gets any impressive offers for Paul Kariya or Keith Tkachuk, they could be asked to waive their no-trade clauses. If those clubs are legitimate Stanley Cup contenders, they just might do it.

UFA in 2010: Paul Kariya, Keith Tkachuk, Brad Winchester, Derek Armstrong, Carlo Colaiacovo, Darryl Sydor, Mike Weaver, Chris Mason.

RFA in 2010: Alexander Steen, David Perron, Cam Janssen, D.J. King, Erik Johnson.

Vancouver Canucks -- Some grit for the bottom of the roster is about the only thing the Canucks might be looking for. Or they might try to upgrade goaltending behind Roberto Luongo. Look for top prospect Cory Schneider, a goaltender some feel could be NHL-ready right now, to be used as trade bait.

UFA in 2010: Pavol Demitra, Kyle Wellwood, Ryan Johnson, Alexandre Bolduc, Matt Pettinger, Willie Mitchell, Mathieu Schneider, Brad Lukowich, Andrew Raycroft.
