Morrow: Canada used its defense to create offense
VANCOUVER -- Dallas Stars forward Brendan Morrow knows a little bit about defense, so he was very pleased with the way Team Canada played in Wednesday's 7-3 win against Russia in the quarterfinal of the Olympic hockey tournament.

The Canadians now advance to the semifinals, playing the winner of Wednesday night's game between Sweden and Slovakia.

Morrow stopped to talk exclusively to NHL.com after he scored a goal on four shots and finished plus-1 in 11:29 of ice time.

NHL.com -- How important was it to get out to that big lead early against this Russian team.

Morrow -- We felt like we would get comfortable with that four-goal lead and they would come take the momentum away from us again. Our game plan was executed well. We got after them on the forecheck, ran into to them down low, got cycling opportunities and buried our chances. The score wasn't evident of how intense a game it was because every time we would score, they would get the momentum back.

NHL.com -- How can you explain the early success the Canadians had tonight?

Team Canada GearMorrow -- We saw the game tape and we saw that they liked to blow the zone and look for that stretch pass, and we thought if we stayed strong as a five-man unit in their zone, we would get our opportunities. We just needed to stay with it, cycle and grind them low and make them chase the puck a little bit.

NHL.com -- You are a pretty good defensive player in your own right. Talk about the job the checking line did tonight against Ovechkin's line.

Morrow -- They were unbelievable. Physical on that line and didn't give them much room to get going. Toews, Richards and Nash, they really stepped up and kind of took that line out of their element and made them earn everything they got and they played real well and real hard against them.
