Jean-Sebastien Giguere lost for the first time as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, even though he thought they were the better team on Monday night.

Ryane Clowe scored with less than seven minutes to go in the third period as the Western Conference-leading San Jose Sharks topped Toronto 3-2.

"I thought we outplayed a pretty good team," Giguere said. "They're obviously one of the better teams in this league, and being as young as we are, being able to outplay them is a really good sign for us."

Dan Boyle and Joe Pavelski also scored for the Sharks, who sent Giguere to his first loss since being acquired from Anaheim on Jan. 31. Giguere had posted consecutive shutouts against New Jersey and Ottawa in his first two games with Toronto.

Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel scored for the Maple Leafs, who nearly tied it with a flourish in the final minute of regulation.

Evgeni Nabokov made 32 saves for San Jose, which has won eight straight road games.

Toronto struck first when Bozak converted a nifty feed from Kessel to beat Nabokov midway through the first period.

San Jose finally broke through in the second period with goals by Boyle and Pavelski.

"Obviously we weren't very good in the first period, we were in sand, clearly outworked," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said.

"I tried to spark the team somehow by shuffling lines, trying some different things. I'm not even sure that worked until the third period, but we found a way to win. It wasn't our best effort by any means."

Elsewhere in the NHL it was: Phoenix 6 Edmonton 1; Philadelphia 3 New Jersey 2; Colorado 5 St. Louis 2; and Anaheim 4 Los Angeles 2.

At Toronto, Kessel tied it for the Maple Leafs with a power-play goal in the final minute of the second period, on a play set up by defenceman Tomas Kaberle, who earned the 400th assist of his career.

Toronto had to scramble to fill out its roster before the game with word that two regular forwards - Christian Hanson and Fredrik Sjostrom - were ill. Nazem Kadri, the Maple Leafs' first-round pick in last spring's draft, arrived in Toronto on an emergency basis.

The 19-year-old Kadri as 26 goals and 66 points in 42 games with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.

Kadri made his NHL debut on the first shift of the game, facing off against Joe Thornton. Kadri took a regular shift through the first two periods, heading into the second intermission with more than 10 minutes of NHL ice time under his belt.

"He skated well," Leafs coach Ron Wilson said. "This was a great opportunity for him to see what the NHL is all about. He had a lot of turnovers, and things he can probably get away with in junior hockey, you can't get away with in our league, let alone against a top team in the league."

Coyotes 6 Oilers 1

At Glendale, Ariz., Matthew Lombardi had two goals and three assists for a career-high five points as Phoenix routed sputtering Edmonton for its 36th victory, matching last season's total.

It was the most one-sided victory of the season for Coyotes, who emerged from bankruptcy owned by the NHL while the league tries to work out a sale. Phoenix has won seven of eight and entered tied with Los Angeles for third-best record in the Western Conference.

Ed Jovanovski, James Vandermeer, Radim Vrbata and Robert Lang also scored for Phoenix, while Ilya Bryzgalov had 33 saves.

The Oilers, winners of three of their last 26 games, averted a shutout when Dustin Penner scored his 23rd goal with 4:28 to play.

Flyers 3 Devils 2

At Philadelphia, Mike Richards scored the go-ahead goal with less than eight minutes left in the third period to lead the Flyers to a victory over New Jersey.

Richards pushed Kimmo Timonen's pass from behind the goal past Martin Brodeur, and Flyers goalie Michael Leighton made that stand up. James van Riemsdyk and Jeff Carter also scored to help the Flyers rally from a 2-0 deficit and snap a two-game losing streak.

Zach Parise and Anssi Salmela scored for the Devils, who have lost 10 of 14.

Salmela left the ice on a stretcher after scoring when he took a hard shoulder to the face from Carter. Salmela tumbled to the ice and remained face down for several minutes, until the Devils medical staff wheeled him off.

-

Ducks 4 Kings 2

At Anaheim, Calif., Corey Perry had a goal and two assists, and the Ducks snapped Los Angeles' franchise-record nine-game winning streak in the latest Freeway Faceoff.

Jonas Hiller made 35 saves, while Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu had a goal and an assist apiece for the last-place Ducks, who tied a franchise record of their own with their 10th straight home win.

Ryan Getzlaf also scored during Anaheim's three-goal second period, but the Canadian Olympian left in the second period with a sprained left ankle.

Avalanche 5 Blues 2

At Denver, Brandon Yip scored two goals, Chris Stewart had a goal and two assists and Colorado beat St. Louis.

Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist, T.J. Galiardi also scored, and Craig Anderson made 32 saves for the Avalanche. Colorado moved into a first-place tie with idle Vancouver in the Northwest Division.

Eric Brewer and Erik Johnson scored for the Blues, who have lost three in a row.

The Avalanche blew it open in the first six minutes 34 seconds of the second period. With the game tied 2-2, Colorado got goals from Stewart, Stastny and Yip 4:09 apart to take a 5-2 lead and chase Chris Mason, who allowed five goals on 15 shots.
