It's official: Satan joins Bruins

BOSTON -- Miroslav Satan has arrived here ready to join the team as an unrestricted free agent signing, according to Bruins coach Claude Julien.

Satan skated at the Bruins practice facility in Wilmington, Mass., this morning will a couple of other Boston players. Sunday, he will take part in his first official practice with his new team.

"He's a guy that has shown he is capable of scoring some goals and we hope he will give us some of that and also provide some competition," Julien said after taking part in Saturday's AT&T Legends Game at Fenway Park.

The Bruins were looking for some depth up front, as well as some secondary scoring and seem to have hit an almost risk-free home run. They signed Satan to a prorated one-year deal and get an offensive talent that is good enough to make the Slovakian Olympic team this week despite not playing competitive hockey for the first three months of the season.

"We were fortunate to get him and that he wanted to come to Boston and we are going to take advantage of that opportunity," Julien said. "Hopefully, he gives us that added scoring that we have been looking for."

In 65 games played with the Penguins last season, Satan recorded 17 goals and 19 assists; but was ineffective down the stretch and actually spent some time down with Pittsburgh's minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He played in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games for the champion Penguins, managing just 1 goal and 5 assists.

Satan, who has 354 goals and 367 assists in 1,012 NHL games, will give Boston some depth and also an additional weapon on the power play.  He has 120 man-advantage goals in his career.

Julien says that they expect Satan to be game ready in a week to 10 days. Satan has been skating four of five times a week since September, according to Julien. Satan's weight and body-fat readings are "top notch" according to the Bruins coach, who visited with Satan on Saturday morning at the team's practice facility.

Once Satan is ready, he will give Julien some offensive diversity, but he will also cause some lineup problems -- especially when top-six forward Milan Lucic returns from his high-ankle sprain. Lucic has been skating with the team for a week and is extremely close to returning.

"With Lucic coming back in our lineup eventually, there is no doubt there is going to be some competition and some tough decisions on my part," Julien said. "But, as I said before, I would rather have to make tough decisions than have no decisions at all."
