BOSTON – Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino today issued a proclamation that declared January 1, 2010 "NHL Winter Classic Day" in Boston.
PROCLAMATION
Whereas: The Boston Bruins are the first US-based franchise in the history of the NHL and have been a part of Boston's sports heritage since 1924; and
Whereas: The Boston Bruins, carrying the rich legacy of Schmidt, Esposito, Orr, Bourque and Neely, will be the home team in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic; and
Whereas: The National Hockey League is the finest hockey League in the world; and
Whereas: The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic has created a new sporting tradition for its fans, teams, players, broadcasters and business partners; and
Whereas: The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic welcomes New Year's Day as a day that unites hockey fans around the world in celebration of the game; and
Whereas: The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will be the first hockey game ever in the rich history of Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox and baseball’s oldest and most beloved ballpark; and
Whereas: The City of Boston possesses a rich hockey history with youngsters learning the game on outdoor ponds from a very early age; and
Whereas: The City of Boston is the home of many colleges and high schools with rich hockey heritages; NOW
Therefore, I, Thomas M. Menino, Mayor of the City of Boston, hereby declare Friday, January 1, 2010 as
NHL Winter Classic Day
In the City of Boston, and urge all my fellow citizens to join me in recognizing the National Hockey League, the Boston Bruins along with the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park for bringing this international event to the City of Boston and for bestowing upon its citizens the love of the game of hockey in its most elementary, spectacular and pure form: outdoor pond hockey.
