2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic plans unveiled

NHL, U.S. hockey legends to take part in festivities

NEW YORK – The National Hockey League will honor members of the 1960 and 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey teams and salute Boston-based civic organizations in special on-field ceremonies during the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on New Year's Day at Fenway Park (1 p.m., ET, NBC, CBC, RDS, NHL Radio).

During the second intermission of the outdoor match-up between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers, gold medal-winning 1960 U.S. Olympic hockey team members Bob Cleary, Bill Cleary, Dick Rodenhiser and coach Jack Riley will take the field. -- Fellow gold medalists Jim Craig, Dave Silk and Jack O'Callahan of the 1980 U.S. Olympic "Miracle on Ice” hockey team also will take part in the tribute to U.S. hockey's two most successful Olympic teams.

Prior to the start of the game, the NHL will honor local organizations for their civic service to the city of Boston -- including area members of the five branches of the U.S. military. -- Among those organizations recognized will be the Boston Fire Department, Boston Police Department, the Boston Emergency Medical Services, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts and the Boston Minuteman Council, Boy Scouts of America. Approximately 200 volunteers from the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America and the New England Women's Hockey League will take the field carrying NHL flags and banners. -- They will be joined by Boston-based corps Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums, Crusaders Senior Drum & Bugle Corps and The St. Kevin Emerald Knights.

Legendary singer-songwriter and Boston native James Taylor will perform the U.S. National Anthem. -- Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Powter will perform the Canadian Anthem. During performances of both anthems, a United States Air Force B-2 Spirit flown by the 509th Bomb Wing of Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and 131st Bomb Wing of the Missouri Air National Guard is scheduled to fly over Fenway Park.  Members of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard will participate in the anthem. Boston's own American Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys will perform their signature song, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," which was featured in the 2006 Academy Award-winning film, The Departed.

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ryan R. LaFrance will drop a ceremonial puck prior to the start of the game, joined by Hockey Hall of Famers Bobby Orr and Bobby Clarke.

The first intermission will feature interactive fan events and a live ice sculpting show by Fear No Ice. In addition, two fans will be chosen to take part in the Smash Box Shootout. Two fans will take turns shooting hockey pucks at autographed Boston Bruins jerseys frozen in a sheet of ice. The contestant that creates the biggest opening in the ice wins a signed jersey.

Another part of the first intermission will include a live video rematch between the champion and the runner-up of the Bud Light NHL Shootout Challenge. They will compete in a shootout-style game using EA Sports NHL 10 video game, which will be shown on giant videos screens in the stadium.

Throughout the NHL Winter Classic, youth hockey players from Boston and Philadelphia will play games on an auxiliary rink in the Fenway Park outfield. -- Young members of Bruins FUNdamentals, SCORE Boston, Philadelphia's Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation and the Boston Red Sox family will participate in paying homage to the game's pond hockey roots.

There are multiple ways for fans throughout North America to tune-in to the historic outdoor matchup between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers on New Year's Day.  NBC will provide live broadcast coverage of the game in the U.S.  In Canada, CBC and RDS will televise the event live.  NHL Network™ will offer all-access pre- and post-game original programming.
