Brodeur could set one record, or two, on Friday

Martin Brodeur can set one NHL record simply by stepping onto the ice at the Prudential Center on Friday night when the New Jersey Devils host the Ottawa Senators. He'd love to go home with a second mark as well.

Brodeur will set the NHL record for regular-season games played by a goaltender with his next appearance -- and since coach Jacques Lemaire has started him in each of the Devils' last 11 games, there's no reason to doubt Brodeur will be in goal against the Senators (7 p.m. ET).

He's also one shutout away from breaking the NHL career mark he shares with Terry Sawchuk. Brodeur allowed a first-period goal to Montreal's Travis Moen on Wednesday but stopped the other 17 shots he faced in New Jersey's 2-1 win.

The Ottawa-New Jersey game is one of six on Friday's NHL schedule.

At 7:30 ET, the Toronto Maple Leafs cross the border to face the Buffalo Sabres (TSN). Both teams are coming off losses on Wednesday: Toronto dropped a 6-3 decision at home to Phoenix, while the Sabres were blanked 2-0 at Ottawa.

Also at 7:30, the Carolina Hurricanes visit the Florida Panthers in a meeting of Southeast Division rivals that won at home on Wednesday. Carolina beat Dallas 5-3 and Florida topped Atlanta 4-3.

A half-hour later, the Tampa Bay Lightning continue their road trip with a stop in St. Louis. The Bolts lost 3-0 at Detroit on Thursday – the same score the Blues lost at Chicago on Wednesday.

Two Original Six teams meet at 8:30 p.m. ET when the Blackhawks host Boston (NHL Network-U.S). The Hawks have pitched shutouts in their last two games, while the Bruins have been idle since a 3-1 home loss to Philadelphia on Monday.

Fans in Vancouver will get a rare chance to see Alex Ovechkin when the Washington Capitals come to GM Place (10 p.m. ET, TSN). Washington hasn't been to Vancouver since Oct. 22, 2006, when the Canucks won 3-2. The Caps have had a couple of days off since a 6-1 win at Colorado on Tuesday. The Canucks fell to 3-1-0 on their eight-game homestand by losing 3-2 to Anaheim on Wednesday.
