Wednesday, 12.02.2009 / 11:28 AM / 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic - Flyers v. Bruins

NHL.com

NEW YORK – With just one month until the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® faces off at Fenway Park in Boston, the world's largest mobile rink refrigeration unit – a custom-built, 53-foot truck that houses the specialized equipment used to make the ice for the event – is preparing to embark on "The Road to the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic."

The branded truck will depart on December 3 from Wayne Gretzky's Restaurant in Toronto after a special appearance on "NHL Power Play" on XM Radio and NHL Network at 4:00 p.m. to begin a journey of more than 800 miles that will include stops in Philadelphia and New York.  It will reach its final destination, Boston's Fenway Park, on Dec. 10, when on-site preparations will begin for the outdoor game on New Year's Day at 1 p.m. ET (NBC, CBC, RDS, SIRIUS XM Radio) between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers.

From Toronto, the truck will head to Philadelphia, where it will stop at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, December 5, for the Flyers and radio partner WXTU's annual Toy Truck Parade and the game that evening between the Flyers and the Washington Capitals at 7:00 p.m. ET (CSN-PH in HD).

On December 6, the truck will park at Rockefeller Center in New York City for an appearance on NBC's Today Show. From 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., fans can visit the truck outside of the NHL Powered by Reebok store located in the heart of Manhattan at 47th Street and Sixth Avenue.  From 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., the truck will be located outside of Madison Square Garden as the New York Rangers host the Detroit Red Wings at 7:00 p.m. ET (MSG in HD).

Aboard the truck at each stop will be NHL Facilities Operations Manager Dan Craig, the man tasked with maintaining the uniformity and quality of the ice surfaces in the more than 30 arenas in which NHL® hockey is played. Recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on building and maintaining outdoor skating surfaces, Craig is responsible for transforming Fenway Park into a world class ice hockey rink on which the Bruins and Flyers will renew their fierce rivalry.

Upon the truck's arrival at Fenway Park at noon ET on December 10, Craig will be available to talk about the challenges and nuances of transforming 20,000 gallons of water into a sheet of ice two inches thick on the venerable ballpark's playing field. Craig also will update media on preparations for the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and discuss the tools and technology being deployed to build the rink and ensure that the ice quality remains at the highest level.
