A look at some numbers at the quarter mark

It may seem like the NHL season started a couple of days ago, but we reach the one-quarter mark during tonight's six-game schedule. Many teams already have passed the one-quarter mark of their schedule; the rest will reach it in the next few days.

Here's a look at some of the key numbers from the first few weeks of the season:

0 -- Home losses in regulation by the Tampa Bay Lightning (5-0-4) and San Jose Sharks (6-0-2) -- the only teams that haven't dropped a home game in 60 minutes so far this season.

1 -- Shots on goal by Alex Ovechkin against the Rangers on Nov. 17, his first game back after being injured Nov. 1 and missing six games. It's his lowest shot total in a full game this season. Of course, being Ovi, he scored on that lone shot, giving him a share of the NHL lead (with the Rangers' Marian Gaborik) in goals with 15.

2 -- Wins by the Montreal Canadiens in regulation. The Canadiens are 2-11-0 when the game is decided in 60 minutes -- but perfect in overtime (4-0) and shootouts (4-0)

3 -- Skaters on the ice when Columbus' Rick Nash (Oct. 20) and Minnesota's Owen Nolan (Nov. 10) scored shorthanded goals. Nash's was three-on-five; Nolan scored while his team was down three skaters because Toronto had pulled its goaltender.

4 -- Losses by three or more goals by the Boston Bruins. That's already twice as many as the Bruins had in all of 2008-09, when they were 17-2 in such games.

5 -- Biggest comeback of the season. Chicago trailed 5-0 in the first period at home to Calgary on Oct. 12, but rallied for a 6-5 overtime victory. The Hawks became the 10th team in NHL history to overcome a five-goal deficit and win.

6 -- Dany Heatley's plus rating in the San Jose Sharks' 6-3 win against Columbus on Oct. 8. He's the first player to go plus-6 in a game since Ottawa's Andrej Meszaros did it in an 8-4 win at Tampa Bay on Jan. 24, 2008.

7 -- First-period goals allowed by the Philadelphia Flyers in their 18 games, by far the fewest of any team in any period.

7.3 -- Negative differential in shots on goal for the Colorado Avalanche, who are one of the NHL's early-season surprises with a 13-6-3 record. Colorado is averaging 25.8 shots on goal and allowing 33.1 -- the largest negative differential in the League.

8 -- Winning streak by the New Jersey Devils, the longest of the season so far. New Jersey had this streak and a 9-0-0 season-opening mark on the road snapped with a 3-2 loss at Philadelphia on Monday.

9 -- Games in which the Toronto Maple Leafs have trailed 2-0, by far the most in the NHL. They've won one -- Nov. 6 at Carolina. The Leafs have allowed the first goal in 17 of their 20 games, by far the worst performance in the NHL.

10 -- Games in which the New York Islanders have gone past regulation, the most in the NHL. The Isles are 2-3 in overtime and 1-4 in shootouts -- and 5-6 in games decided in 60 minutes.

11 -- Games in which the team leading after two periods has failed to get a point. The Florida Panthers are the only team that twice has led going into the third period and lost in regulation. Nine other teams have done it once.

13 -- Consecutive shootout wins by Columbus goaltender Mathieu Garon (an NHL record), including a pair with the Blue Jackets this season. The first 11 came with Edmonton, the team he beat in a shootout Nov. 16.

14 -- Winless streak by the Carolina Hurricanes, who went 0-10-4 between wins against Florida on Oct. 9 and Minnesota on Nov. 15. That matched the longest victory drought in franchise history, set in 1992 when the team played in Hartford, and is the longest winless streak in the League this season.

18 -- Plus rating of Philadelphia defenseman Matt Carle, the best in the NHL. New Jersey's Zach Parise is next at plus-15, followed by Philadelphia teammate Chris Pronger at plus-14.

19 -- Points by Islanders rookie John Tavares, the most of any first-year player so far. The No. 1 pick in the 2009 Entry Draft also is first among rookies with 9 goals.

21 -- Shots on goal by Washington's Tomas Fleischman. He's scored on seven of them, giving him a League-leading 33.3 shooting percentage.

25 -- Shots on goal by Tampa Bay against the New Jersey Devils and goaltender Martin Brodeur in the second period Oct. 10. It was the most shots Brodeur ever has faced in a period. He allowed one goal, and the Devils won the game, 4-3 in a shootout.

34 -- Shutouts in the first 306 games this season. Boston's Tim Thomas, Florida's Tomas Vokoun and Ilya Bryzgalov of Phoenix are tops with three.

41 -- Seasons in which the Philadelphia Flyers have beaten the Los Angeles Kings at least once, including a 3-2 win at the Staples Center on Wednesday night. The 2003-04 season, in which the Kings won the lone meeting, was the only one in which Philadelphia did not beat Los Angeles.

55 -- Most shots by a team this season. Florida's Tomas Vokoun stopped 52 of Chicago's 55 in a season-opening 4-3 shootout win Oct. 2, and Nashville got two of its shots past Montreal's Carey Price for a 2-0 win against the Canadiens on Nov. 14.

1,000 -- Wins for the Devils since the franchise relocated from Colorado in 1982 after New Jersey beat Washington 5-2 at home Nov. 14. They have a 1,000-853-249 record in New Jersey -- considerably more successful than during the franchise's previous stops in Kansas City (27-110-23) and Colorado (113-281-86).
