TORONTO -- Peter Forsberg returning to the Colorado Avalanche would make one of the better feel-good stories of the 2009-10 season. But Avalanche GM Greg Sherman wasn't biting too heavily at that script as the NHL General Managers Meetings got under way Tuesday afternoon at the Westin Harbour Castle.
 
"It's something that if you are polling, I think everybody would probably say they are monitoring that situation," Sherman told NHL.com.

"There're discussions that will be had, but that's consistent with all players, whether it be a trade or a free agent. Just like it has been in the past it is not something that I would discuss in any detail."
 
Sherman did admit that the Avalanche are at least monitoring Forsberg's progress as he played for Sweden in the Karjala Cup, which finished this past weekend.
 
"We had had a scout that was already scheduled to be at that tournament, so we did have Anders Carlsson representing us there," Sherman told NHL.com "We are having ongoing discussions about the tournament and that would be part of the discussions."
 
In Thursday's tournament opener, Forsberg did not score. He centered a line that featured former NHLer P.J. Axelsson and San Jose Shark prospect Patrick Zackrisson. He was better against Russia, creating several chances that went unfulfilled. In the final game, Sweden was crushed by rival Finland.

"I have to accept that I cannot just jump into an international game and try to dominate," Forsberg said during the tournament. "It's not that easy, especially when you're 36."

Forsberg played with the Avalanche from 1994 to 2004 and also made a short comeback with the club in 2007-08 when he scored 14 points in nine games before chronic injury problems once again derailed his season. Forsberg won two Stanley Cups in Colorado and is among the franchise's most-beloved players.
 
Forsberg believes he has finally addressed his chronic foot injuries and is once again on the comeback trail, hoping to line up a professional gig in order to showcase his skills to Team Sweden in hopes of playing for his country at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

"Of course I want to be in the Olympics. It is a dream to be playing such a tournament in Canada," Forsberg said during the Karjala Cup.

Reports suggest that several other NHL teams are interested in Forsberg's services, including the Vancouver Canucks, who admitted to dispatching three different scouts to monitor the progress of the former hart Trophy winner.
 
Forsberg has 885 points in 706 NHL regular-season games and has added 171 points in 151 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
