MEDICINE HAT, Alta. - The defenceman comes in from the point, takes the back-door feed and buries a one-timer.
It's a familiar scene, especially on the power play for the Medicine Hat Tigers, but on Tuesday Thomas Heemskerk somehow kept it out of the Everett Silvertips net. The lunging stop was the decisive moment in a 3-1 Silvertips win at The Arena, giving the visitors a 4-0 record on their season-long seven-game road swing.
"That saved the game for us," said Silvertips coach Craig Hartsburg. "He played good all night, but that save in the third was big."
Everett had taken a 2-1 lead on Byron Froese's marker early in the frame and despite being outshot 26-19 didn't really give the Tigers many good chances. But when the chances came, the 20-year-old Heemskerk was more than up to the task.
"He came across pretty quick, it was a wobbling puck and I wasn't able to get much on it, he made the save," said Tigers defenceman Jace Coyle, whose point shot in the first period was tipped home by Bretton Cameron for the lone Medicine Hat goal. "It seems we've had quite a few nights like that lately, but hopefully it'll turn around."
Now losers of four of their last five, the Tigers (9-7-2-2) head to Regina Wednesday feeling not so bad about themselves given that they didn't really do much wrong. Tyler Bunz was beat on a couple workmanlike efforts by Froese and Shane Harper but the coaching staff focused on wanting more chances offensively afterwards.
"I think we were mostly pleased with our game," said Tigers associate coach Shaun Clouston. "Our penalty kill was real solid, we would have liked to generate more chances on our power play. With the exception of two or three real good chances we wanted to create more there.
"We didn't give up a whole ton of scoring chances tonight. You're not going to win every single night but I think it was a solid effort, we just look for areas to improve."
Everett improved to 10-4-0-0. Hartsburg said he didn't think his club has played its best game on this swing, but good goaltending and sticking to the game plan has paid off as they head in to Lethbridge on Wednesday.
"On the road you've got to find a way, and we did," he said.
