The Wings, already without forward Johan Franzen due to knee surgery, lost another key piece Thursday night when center Valtteri Filppula broke his wrist in the second period against the Edmonton Oilers during a 6-5 shootout loss for Detroit.
Coach MikeBabcock said Filppula will miss "eight weeks or so."
"It's a huge loss," said teammate Patrick Eaves, who took some of the ice time that became available after Filppula went down.
Filppula had 2 goals and 4 assists in 11 games this season. He posted a career high in points (40) and assists (28) last season while adding 12 goals. He was a key contributor in the playoffs too, scoring 3 goals and 13 assists in 23 games.
