Kings claim Jones on waivers from Flyers

Defenseman Randy Jones, a salary cap casualty in Philadelphia at the start of this season, has a new home on the other coast.

The Los Angeles Kings claimed the 28-year-old defenseman off re-entry waivers Thursday morning while also announcing that defenseman Alec Martinez was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 5 due to an ankle injury.

Jones, who reportedly carries a $2.75 million cap hit, was too expensive for the Flyers to keep around as a fifth, sixth or seventh defenseman after they signed Blair Betts and decided to keep rookie James van Riemsdyk. He was waived prior to the season and re-assigned to Philadelphia's AHL affiliate, the Adirondack Flyers.

But with Simon Gagne, who needs surgery to repair two small hernias in his right groin, going on long-term injured reserve, the Flyers had enough cap space to place Jones on re-entry waivers Wednesday. Jones would have joined the club Friday had he cleared.

The Kings have cap space to burn, so they grabbed Jones, who had 69 points in 217 games with the Flyers since 2003-04.

Jones should figure in as the Kings' seventh defenseman behind Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson, Rob Scuderi, Sean O'Donnell, Matt Greene and rookie Davis Drewiske.

Peter Harrold is also listed as a defenseman, but he's played the bulk of this season as the Kings' fourth-line center.
