The Washington Capitals have signed center Cody Eakin, their third-round choice in the 2009 Entry Draft, to a three-year entry-level contract. Vice president and general manager George McPhee announced the signing on Tuesday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Eakin, 19, is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, who is in his fourth season with the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League. He has 9 goals and 3 assists for 12 points in nine games this season, and is Swift Current’s leading goal scorer. Eakin is tied for first in the WHL with five power-play goals and tied for second in the league in goals scored.
Eakin had 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points in 54 games for the Broncos last season. He participated in the Capitals’ development camp this summer as well as the team’s rookie camp and training camp in September.
