* Carolina center
Eric Staal admitted returning to Prudential Center does bring back memories of last season's dramatic Game 7 triumph, but it certainly doesn't assure them of anything this time around.
"This is a building where our team has played well recently; we've had some hard fought games in the regular season and then obviously winning a playoff round here is going to leave some good memories but, at the same time, you know how difficult it's going to be to win in here," Staal said.
* Maurice told NHL.com that his top line would again feature Staal centering for
Ray Whitney and
Tuomo Ruutu. Whitney joined Staal's line in the third period against Pittsburgh on Thursday and the veteran forward generated two goals to send the game into overtime.
"We'll start the way we finished against Pittsburgh and take it from there," Maurice said.
* The Hurricanes figured to get a boost from the return of defenseman
Joni Pitkanen, who's missed the previous five games while recovering from knee surgery. He'll be paired with
Tim Gleason.
In Pitkanen's absence, defenseman
Joe Corvo has averaged 27:31 of ice time per game.
"We're still getting to know (offseason acquisitions)
Aaron Ward and
Andrew Alberts so once we get a handle on who they should play with and what they're optimum matchup is, then Joe's minutes will go down," Carolina coach
Paul Maurice said.
