DEVILS' BRODEUR SET TO ADD TO HIS HONOR ROLL ON OPENING NIGHT
New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur is slated to make his 15th consecutive opening-night start Saturday when the Devils host Philadelphia, the longest such streak by a goaltender in NHL history. Brodeur would pass Terry Sawchuk and Patrick Roy, who made 14 consecutive opening-night starts during their Hall of Fame careers.
Most Consecutive Opening-Night Starts By A Goaltender (entering 2009-10):
STREAK | GOALTENDER | TEAM/S | SEASONS |
14 seasons | Martin Brodeur | New Jersey | 1994-95 through 2008-09 (active) |
14 seasons | Terry Sawchuk | Detroit, Boston | 1950-51 through 1963-64 |
14 seasons | Patrick Roy | Montreal, Colorado | 1989-90 through 2002-03 |
Brodeur's 14 consecutive starts in season openers for New Jersey already is the longest streak by a goaltender for one team. Last season Brodeur passed Chicago's Tony Esposito, who made 13 consecutive opening-night starts for the Blackhawks from 1969-70 through 1981-82.
Brodeur also will be appearing in his 1,000th NHL regular-season Saturday, joining Roy (1,029) as the only goaltenders in League history to reach the milestone.
Brodeur has posted a 9-3-2 record with a 1.88 goals-against average, .928 save percentage and two shutouts in 14 opening-night appearances. Following is a breakdown:
