Thrashers acquire McCarthy from Ducks

The Atlanta Thrashers have acquired defenseman Steve McCarthy from the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. McCarthy will report to the Chicago Wolves (AHL).

McCarthy, 28, has appeared in 302 career NHL games with Chicago, Vancouver and Atlanta, recording 55 points (17 goals, 38 assists) and 168 penalty minutes. The 6-1, 210-pound defenseman set a career-high in assists (12) and tied his career-high in points (16) in 46 games with the Thrashers during the 2006-07 season.

The Trail, British Columbia, native, appeared in 18 games with Salavat Yulayev Ufa (KHL) in 2008-09, recording 16 penalty minutes.

Prior to his professional career, McCarthy played four seasons of junior hockey in the Western Hockey League from 1996-97 to 1999-00, recording 128 points (43 goals, 85 assists) in 154 games with Edmonton and Kootenay. He was named to the WHL East First All-Star Team following the 1999-00 season.

McCarthy was originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, 23rd overall, of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
