Don Cherry disappointed in Gretzky resignation

WINNIPEG - Hockey commentator Don Cherry says he doesn't understand why Wayne Gretzky is walking away from the Phoenix Coyotes.

Cherry says Gretzky should be on the ice with players, and forget about any financial concerns.

Gretzky has decided to step down as coach and director of hockey operations for the Coyotes, saying both remaining bidders for the troubled team have not included him in their future plans.

Cherry is in Winnipeg today, a city where hockey fans still bemoan the departure of the Jets more than a decade ago.

Cherry says he's confident Winnipeg will get an NHL team again, and says it's only a matter of time before a money-losing franchise from the southern United States relocates to the Manitoba capital.

Quote of the Day

We think that Randy is a very good coach. Our players think that Randy is a very good coach. We think that he's going to get the most out of this group. With the addition of the two assistants, a bit of a different dynamic, we're very comfortable that this is a quality coaching staff that's going to maximize the potential of this team.
