Rangers need to bolster offense from last season

Tuesday, 09.22.2009 / 3:00 AM / 2009-2010 Season Preview

NEW YORK RANGERS
2008-09 SEASON STATS

Category Rank (Conference)
2008-09 Points 95
(7th eAst/12TH NHL)
Change from 2007-08 -2
Home Points 56
(4th eAst/7th NHL)
Away Points 39
(10th eAst/18th NHL)
Advantage Margin            +17
The Rangers struggled on the power play, but not for the lack of opportunities -- especially at home, where they had 33 more chances than the opposition, though they scored only nine more PPGs.

Even-Strength Goals Margin        -15

No full-time Ranger had a higher plus-minus rating than Ryan Callahan's plus-7, and only Callahan and Nikolai Zherdev had as many as 19 even-strength goals.

Special Teams Goal Margin        +3
The Rangers led the NHL in penalty-killing at 87.8 percent and surrendered only 40 power-play goals while scoring nine times shorthanded. But the power play nearly undid all of that good work -- the Rangers were 29th in percentage (13.9) and goals (48) and allowed 14 shorthanded goals.

Goals by Defensemen            25
One reason for the Rangers' struggles on the power play was the lack of production from point men Wade Redden and Michal Rozsival. They combined for 11 goals (8 by Rozsival) and just five on the power play.

Overtime Record
Total: 13-3-6 (OT: 3-3, SO: 10-6)

The Rangers made the playoffs because of their success in the shootout, winning a League-high 10 times in the competition -- including seven of nine at Madison Square Garden.

Times Scored First
42 (Record: 28-9-5)

The Rangers were a lot less successful when scoring first on the road than they were at the Garden. They won 17 of the 22 home games in which they scored first, but were just 11-5-4 on the road.

Best 08-09 Number            31-14-7
The Rangers' record on weeknights (Monday through Friday). The Rangers were .500 or better on every weeknight (including 7-1-2 on Tuesdays), but just 8-11-1 on Saturdays and 4-5-1 on Sundays.

Worst 08-09 Number          200
Non-shootout goals scored by the Rangers. It was their lowest full-season total since 1997-98 (197) and the second-lowest since expansion began in 1967-68.

Scheduling
Rangers fans will never get bored with too many home games in a row. The Blueshirts' longest homestand is three games -- there are seven of them. It's the second season in a row the Rangers will not have a homestand longer than three games.
